Fuse premiere in Exeter - innovative new sci-fi movie from Brixham-based filmmaker

Brixham-based Ben Barfoot is having his sci-fi thriller Fuse premiered in Exeter tonight (Saturday, September 18).

The movie, which combines live action and animation, is getting its first official screening at the Exeter Phoenix at 5pm. (Ben has already touted around the Cannes circuit.)

Ben said: “We spent four years making it and thought we should put it on in Exeter. Just about all the crew were or are from Devon. Of course many are now working in London. We wanted a chance to show friends and family what all the work had been for.’

And to cut down the post-production costs of such a high-concept film, the production team came up with their own software to infill the blue-screen background -well, that’s our take on it. Here’s how the techies at the Herald Express have explained it:

Using a system of pallet locking and line detection systems from one chosen frame, the illustrated style can be mapped across an entire shot using a series of complex algorithms.

Ben explains it a little better for the non-tech audience. ‘Usually you have to colour the frames manually,’ he said.

‘We’ve been working on this technology that does the bulk of it for you. It’s the only thing like it around.’
