Pewas Uter | the blurred edges between myth and reality
Contemporary folk horror can send a shiver down your spine. Add to that a language that speaks to your soul and Pewas Uter, which is in Cornish, feels like a bundled of eerie that just waiting to be unleashed. And they haven’t even launched the crowdfunder yet.
“It’s a film exploring masculine rites of passage, liminality and the blurred edges between myth and reality,” writer director Tommy Creagh told D&CFilm. “My main aim in making the film was to portray Cornwall’s rich droll-telling tradition on screen.”
The film draws on the traditional Cornish droll of Uter Bosence, piskey folklore and the ancient game of Cornish hurling. But the project is about more than putting these things on screen, says the filmmakers. “A major part of our motivation is preserving Cornish heritage by finding ways for it to exist in contemporary culture,” they say.
If you didn’t know, drolls are basically Cornwall’s stories and folktales of the land, and they are unlike anything else you will find elsewhere in the country

“As well as drawing attention to Cornwall’s rich storytelling tradition in the film, we’re also portraying the language, being a fully Cornish language short film, as well as its native sports,” says Tommy.
“There is a Cornish motto that goes hurling is our sport, even though it is now only practised in a few parishes and is under threat. So in a way it’s about cultural preservation of Cornwall’s myths, language and sports.”
