Celebrate diversity, and inclusion with Respect Cinema
The Respect Cinema screening is a curated selection of short films that explore multiculturalism, identity, and social inclusion and is a focus for diversity-driven indie cinema in the South West. With the long-term goal of scaling into a major regional festival, the event prioritizes micro-budget storytelling that challenges conventional perspectives. And it is looking for next year’s selection.
The event aims to highlight and celebrate multiculturalism, diversity, and inclusion through film, while providing a platform for both local and international filmmakers to share stories that foster understanding and community cohesion to foster community dialogue and engagement on issues of equality and human rights.
The aim is to continue that dialogue and networking between international filmmakers and local creatives, building bridges across cultures and artistic communities. And the films, the settings, and the issues also engage the wider community in conversations about equality, identity, and belonging.
Past programming has featured titles like Beanka, My Name is Darak, Home, Outsider, Between The Lines, and a special edit of Us—all highlighting different aspects of identity, inclusion, and social change. Animated selections curated by Yellow Mouse Studios further diversify the technical styles on display.
Hullo...
Thank you for reading. We could do with your help to keep going. All our content is free... But if you can, you can support us to continue bringing you this coverage, these articles, interviews and reviews. This connection with real indie filmmakers.
It's here we encourage you to get out, watch indie films, support crowdfunders, go to your local venue.
And if you can, Pay What You Can to keep all this going. From £1 a week - £4 a month - a fiver, or whatever you can spare. Much appreciated.
Respect Cinema is run as a collaboration between Exeter Respect, Wiseman Productions, and the Exeter Phoenix.
Submissions are now open and this year, they are actively seeking intentional submissions that connect international filmmakers with local creatives, fostering cross-cultural collaboration and dialogue.
Take a look at last year’s selection and submit your film.
