The lighting, the scenery and the pace gently lure you into a story that swells with emotion. There is no retribution, only tentative growth. And it’s gripping.

Rising star Sinead Ferguson is Delilah Thomas, whose art career is taking off just as her relationship is splintering and the secret she is carrying is getting heavier. Tim Seyfert, who also wrote Pieces of Us, plays novelist Jack Holloway who is back in Cornwall on a book tour, which only seems to exacerbate his loneliness.

As Evelyn Thomas, Lisa Leilani is Delilah’s mum, who is confident and shattered. Rory Wilton has bemused and generous vulnerability as husband Patrick Thomas. It’s a swirl of the mess of real people with all their weaknesses and resilience.

First time director Ben Fullman allows confusion and contact to have the space to swell with an organic honesty. He told D&CFilm: “Pieces of Us is a deeply personal project that explores themes of identity, human connection, and the sometimes difficult structure within a family in a way that should resonate with a broad audience.”

Pieces of Us cements a certain type of film from Cornwall – from the pen of Tim Seyfert, and produced by the Kernowfornia Film Company, such as Nowhere and Terminus – that explore themes of loss, the dynamics of relationships and confronting the ghosts of the past.

Cornwall makes a statement, and, like the film, it is quiet and forceful: the beaches; the quirks; the creative welcome.

Pieces of Us has the wonderfully worldly-wise recognition that lives are complicated spaghetti… there’s no crash or bang, but the emotional heat is turned up and cooked to perfection.

Pieces of Us will have its official premiere at the North East International Film Festival in Newcastle, on 25 October, at the Everyman Cinema.
