“In our stupidity we’ve forgotten about how effective it is,” says the trailer to Chasing the Sun, a new cycling documentary, produced by Devon-based Pip Piper, one of the big wheels behind the Exmouth Film Festival.
Chasing the Sun follows the Chase The Sun cycling event, where a whole host of ordinary and not so ordinary cyclists travel from coast to coast, or 200 miles in a day, fueled only by ‘sandwiches, energy bars, cups of tea and good cheer’.
Turns out the human on a bicycle is the most efficient being on the planet.
But of course, the film captures so much more. It covers issues of climate change, congestion, pollutions, mental health, to the backdrop of wonderful landscapes, diverse communities, and what some (not us, obvs) would call a bonkers day out. And as the film says, it’s ‘about ordinary cyclists doing extraordinary things’.
Chasing The Sun is getting its World Premiere at the prestigious Kendal Mountain Festival on 17 November in Kendal, Cumbria.
Pip Piper, one of the producers of Chasing The Sun, said: “Kendal Mountain Festival is one of the world’s leading adventure film festivals and has a focus around outdoor adventure, nature and climate emergency as well as cycling, so we are delighted that we are able to premiere the film there, as it shares many of those themes.”
Before you start pointing your pedals you need to know there are a number of the Chase The Sun events: Ireland; UK North; UK South; and Italy for 2024.
Pip is also a dynamo behind the DOCLab at the Exeter Phoenix, a series of events nurturing documaking filmmaking talent.
