These guidelines relate to the 2016 Documentary Short Film Commission. Please read them carefully before submitting your application.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
Exeter Phoenix recognises that moving image plays an important role in reflecting our culture, establishing individual voices and can help filmmakers and artists develop new skills and long-term relationships with cast, crew and cinema audiences, both locally and nationally.
Exeter Phoenix has awarded nearly 100 bursaries and commissions during the 14 years the scheme has been running. For many the process has helped establish film careers and played a vital role in building relationships within the creative industries.
The 2016 DEVON Documentary Short film Commission will offer ONE award of £500 for the development of an enlightening and untold factual narrative, which will engage a cinema audience though concise visual story telling.
Applicants who are shortlisted will be required to live pitch their idea in front of a panel and small audience at Two Short Nights Film Festival 2015.
WHAT CAN YOU APPLY FOR?
Exeter Phoenix Digital is inviting applications for the development of a documentary short film project. The application must be an original idea or script for a documentary film, which speaks to a cinema audience. Exeter Phoenix will expect two edits of the final documentary, one which is 10 minutes long and one which is three minutes long.
The 2016 Short Film Commissions will offer a total of £500 in cash towards the cost of developing and realising the short film project.
The commission will include at least £240 worth of training in camera skills, sound recording, postproduction and script development provided by Exeter Phoenix. The successful applicant will also receive in kind support to the value of £1500 which will contribute towards the hire of film and sound equipment, studio hire and film production facilities, and support throughout the production. Filmmakers will also have access to advice on distribution and crowd funding. Projects may also receive sessions in producing, post-production, budget management and good film practice, such as equipment, cast, crew, locations, travel, etc.
WHO CAN APPLY?
The 2016 DEVON Documentary Short Film Commission is open to individuals or groups who reside in Devon, UK. We actively encourage applications from students, or first time filmmakers as well as those with filmmaking experiences. Writers, producers, directors, with a variety of experience are also encouraged but it is not essential to be specialised at this stage.
Applicants must be able to prove they reside in Devon, UK. Applicants must be aged 18 years or over.
The deadline for applications is Monday 9 November 2015.
Successful applicants will be contacted by Friday 13 November with an invitation to present a live pitch at Two Short Nights Film Festival on Friday 27 November 2015. The pitch will be presented to a panel comprised of Exeter Phoenix representatives and industry professionals. The panel’s decision will be announced that evening, with the commission then awarded on this date.
Projects are to be completed by September 2016 and will be screened as part of Two Short Nights Film Festival 2016 and may be previewed before feature films in Studio 74, Exeter Phoenix’ dedicated Screening Space.
APPLICATION AND ASSESSMENT
All application must be made via our online submission process. We cannot accept applications via post, fax, disc or via general email.
Exeter Phoenix will be looking for inspiring and creative proposals that demonstrate originality.
Applicants will be asked to complete and submit an online form and will also need to submit a proposal no longer than 400 words outlining ideas. The proposal should clearly demonstrate the tone, themes, genre and strategy of your ideas. We will not accept any supporting material at this stage.
All applicants will receive a confirmation email to state we have received your application.
Applications will be presented to the commission panel after the deadline. Once the panel has selected a short list all applicants be contact again via email either;
a) To inform you that your application has not been successful. Or,
b) To invite you to pitch your idea at Two Short Nights Film Festival on Friday 27 November 2015.
