Hold onto your hats and get into your seats for a special preview of Richard Ayoade‘s second movie, The Double, at the Exeter Picturehouse, followed by a live satellite Q&A with Richard hosted by Jonathan Ross.
Richard Ayoade‘s second feature (his first was Submarine) is a loose adaptation of Dostoyevsky‘s novella, which we are told, melds ominous Kafkaesque vulnerability with the dark humour of Terry Gilliam’s Brazil.
The film stars Jesse Eisenberg as the meek office drone Simon James, alternately berated and ignored by his boss, Mr Papadopoulos (Wallace Shawn, creepily magnificent), and taunted by Hannah (Mia Wasikowska), the indifferent co-worker he lusts after.
When a spry new recruit -called James Simon and his exact doppelgänger (Eisenberg again, obviously) -joins the company, despite ignoring his job description, he quickly oils his way into Mr Papadopoulos’s favour and Hannah’s embrace.
Simon’s confusion and desperation for whatever it is that makes James succeed where he fails is the film’s wonderful, wincingly sardonic conceit.
The screening followed by the Q&A will take place on Thursday, March 27 at 6.45pm. Book by calling 0871 902 5730, on line at www.picturehouses.co.uk or in person at the cinema.
