There’s a thrilling boom in superheroes taking to the screen, and as Thor is putting his hammer down (that’s Mjölnir to you), we’re looking to the horizon for the next instalment from Captain America.
Captain America The Winter Soldier sees the Captain, or rather Steve Rogers, try to adjust to the modern shadowy world. But instead of listening in on Angela Merkel’s phone conversations, this modern world has thwacks, bangs and big things falling out of the sky (Helicarrier, anyone?).
Even in the trailer Robert Redford is offering up a menacing presence as S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Alexander Pierce, and Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury seems more pragmatic than ever. It all lends itself to a very unstable world for the wholesome 50s hero.
Plus there’s the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), who will do more than just try to set Captain A with the girl from statistics, and The Falcon (Anthony Mackie), as well as The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) himself.
We can’t wait, and will be pouring over the trailer until we get our fill. And once we’ve glutted out, there’s the The Avengers: Age of Ultron to look forward to.
According to our in-house film sociologist the current tide of superhero films is ‘reflection of the social-economic-political-environment of uncertainty and change plus they are jolly good fun’. She then promptly went off to muse over the lack of Spider-man in this Captain America and Avenger’s world of Marvel.
