The film, Skyborn, was Robin’s second collaboration with director Jamie Stone, and as befitting a short which reaches such high accolades, was a technical challenge.
Robin, who graduated from the MA Cinematography course at the National Film and Television School in March, said: “Skyborn is set in a world of permanent fog, which necessitated shooting mainly in the studio at the school, using a large set and lighting rig.
“We shot on the Arri Alexa camera, and used one 14mm lens for the whole film, to give it a very particular look. There was also a miniatures shoot too, for certain sequences. All in all it was quite complex, and we’re all very proud of the fact we pulled it off.”
Skyborn follows father Gideon and his son Blue who are stranded in a foggy post apocalyptic wasteland and build a flying machine to see about the clouds.
The film is starting its festival run soon, but here’s the trailer to sample the technical expertise.
