Festival screenings, awards, and workshops and exhibitions, we’ve picked out just four highlights at Animated Exeter 2012
Fantasy projection and workshop
A projection in Exeter’s Cathedral Yard and Close created by film trick luminaries, Forkbeard Fantasy and funded by Arts Council England. on the main weekend of the festival, the Essential Weekend, February 17-19. The artists will also be holding a masterclass Crossing the Celluloid Divide, to demonstrate their trademark style featuring a technique that enables characters to seamlessly step out of projected film onto stage and back again, establishing an impressive comic dynamic between film and performance. The class will be held on Friday 17 February, upstairs at ASK, the Italian restaurant in Cathedral Close.
The Dark Crystal arts
Animated Exeter 2012 will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of the classic fantasy film directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz: The Dark Crystal. This will be introduced by the film’s original concept designers: Brian and Wendy Froud, followed by a Q&A.
Devon-based artist and conceptual designer Brian Froud has sold over 8 million books and has an international cult following. His imaginative illustrations inspired Jim Henson (The Muppets) who hired Froud to collaborate with him on the film The Dark Crystal. On the set of the film, Brian Froud met Wendy, a puppet designer, creator of The Dark Crystal’s Gelflings and an internationally acclaimed doll maker with her own cult following. Brian’s artwork is celebrated in an exhibition, The Art of Brian Froud, at Exeter Phoenix’s Cafe Bar from January 31 to February 25. Wendy will be holding a fascinating sculpting masterclass on Saturday, February 18, upstairs at ASK, the Italian restaurant in the Cathedral Close.
Aardman Animations will be visiting the festival with a sneak preview of their brand new feature film, The Making of Aardman’s Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists, directed by Peter Lord, co-directed by Jeff Newitt and voiced by Hugh Grant, Imelda Staunton and David Tennant. The Pirates! marks Aardman’s first feature-film collaboration with Hollywood studio Sony Pictures Entertainment, after making three full-length films with Dreamworks.
