This week’s first recommendation is a documentary by David Weissman, We Were Here. It’s a documentary about the arrival and impact of AIDS during the 1980s in San Francisco.
The film focuses upon five individuals who lived through this period, recounting their experiences and how their beloved city of sexual freedom and social experimentation, turned into an epicentre for the sexually transmitted disease. This looks like an interesting documentary, where the director is happy to let his subjects tell their story rather than his and it should be a fascinating examination of how quickly society can change.
On any other week and my next movie would be ‘film of the week’. So apologies to Michelle Williams who stars in My Week With Marilyn. The film is based upon the diaries of Colin Clark, concerning his brief ‘fling’ with the American movie mega-star while she was in the UK filming The Prince and the Showgirl, with Laurence Olivier. My Week With Marilyn should illustrate what many film fans already know, that Michelle Williams is one of America’s top actresses. An actress who has already had great roles in Brokeback Mountain, I’m Not There and Blue Valentine, but as Marilyn Monroe, Williams ‘star’, should be elevated beyond the indie market. However, it does unfortunately star Dominic Cooper. Damn!
Despite strong competition from Michelle Williams my ‘film of the week’ was an easy choice. It’s Michael Shannon’s newest film, Take Shelter. What’s more to be said? It’s a film and it stars Michael Shannon. Simple decision really. Film of the week…
OK, so begrudgingly I’ll give you some more info, in the hopes of wooing you into watching America’s finest actor. However, I really shouldn’t have to.
Curtis (Shannon) is a caring husband and father but he’s being plagued by a series of terrible, apocalyptic visions. The only problem is he’s the only one witnessing them. Is Curtis some sort of modern day Noah or is he losing his marbles?
Now, if you’ve been following Shannon’s career thus far you’ll anticipate that basically, Curtis is going bonkers. If there’s one thing Michael Shannon excels at, it’s going bonkers, but if you don’t believe me then I suggest you rent Friedkin’s, Bug. Or you could just watch Take Shelter, but either way you win. WINNING!
