Have you seen Scarlett Johansson’s latest picture? No, not that picture -we’re talking about her new movie, We Bought A Zoo.
She’s starring with Matt Damon, Thomas Haden-Church, Elle Fanning, and Curb Your Enthusiasm’s JB Smoove in the flick, directed by schmaltz kingpin Cameron Crowe -his first narrative film in six years.
Regular D&CFilm readers will know the romantic comedy is based on a book by Benjamin Mee, who bought Dartmoor Zoological Park, near Plymouth, along with more than 200 animals, back in 2007.
Suffice to say, the story has been, ahem, ‘Americanised’ somewhat -as you can see from the first trailer, below.
We spent the whole two minutes rolling our eyes and making vomiting noises but that’s just us. And is there seriously a record scratch on there?! Bleck!
But let’s not be too harsh. The local zoo reportedly received a massive bag of cash from 20th Century Fox once the movie went into production helping to ensure its survival for the moment at least.
Benjamin said recently: “We really hope this puts both Plymouth and Dartmoor Zoological Park on the map.”
Indeed. Perhaps even if no one sees the film (and, judging by the trailer, that’s a very real possibility), at least some people will pop along to check out the real Dartmoor Zoological Park.
We Bought A Zoo opens in the UK on December 23.
