Full cast required for animated short in Exeter/Devon area

The Grobler is a part animation, part live-action, fantasy short, funded by the Exeter Phoenix Bursary 2011. The film is essentially a dark fable, told by an old man to his grandchild, to deter him from entering the gloomy forest alone, complete with tree goblins, forest bugs, and grab happy branches.

The ‘fable’ section of the film will be stop-motion animated, but using full scale sets and real actors, creating a unique blend of the organic, rickety, aesthetic that we all love about traditional stop-motion whilst being able to tap into real human emotion.

THOMAS
Thomas is the main protagonist and is generally a good natured and polite child, but when boredom strikes he can find himself getting into mischief from time to time. Being an only child with no other children nearby to play with, he takes to exploring, and dreams of escaping the clutches of the town and heading out in search of the places and characters that he’s heard about and read about in his story books and comics.
Playing age: 9-10
Days Required: 1-2

GRANDPA
Grandpa is a retired widower and is the steady constant in Thomas’ life, who’s parents work long hours away from home. He is a lovable, cuddly looking man who wears colorful jumpers and smokes a pipe. He very much plays the good cop role, rarely telling Thomas off, but tries to subtly influence his behavior through his bedtime stories.
Playing age: 65-70
Days Required: 1-2

MOTHER
Thomas’ mother is a strong, hardworking woman who works long hours to keep a roof over the families heads. Tom’s misadventures are a constant worry to her, and she tries in vain to discipline him in the short amount of time she spends with him, but ultimately has to accept that she’s second in command to Grandpa.
Playing Age: 28-32
Days Required: 1-2

Animation Roles

Actors will be required to effectively “act” in slow-motion, requiring a great deal of concentration and energy.

THE GROBLER
The infamous Grobler is the main protagonist in the film. He lives in the dark forest and loves to feed on soft-boned creatures. Physically, he is tall and gangly, and has the pointy facial features of a goblin. Bits of twig and moss grow from his scalp and chest. He is extremely well-spoken and has a sneaky, intelligent persona.
Days Required: 4-5
Playing Age: Doesn’t matter but you will need to be physically fit

CHARLIE
Charlie is a fictional character and is effectively Tom’s projection of himself into his Grandpa’s story. So he shares many of the same characteristics, in particular his love for exploration, but is a little older, braver (or stupider?) and better kitted out than the real Tom. He is the lead character in terms of screen time.
Days Required: 5-7
Playing age: 16 (Could be as old as early 20s if you have a young face)
