John Garden, the musical director and keyboard player for the pop band Scissor Sisters, is visiting the Barn Cinema at Dartington on Thursday, June 23 to perform his own semi-improvised live soundtrack to silent classic movie, The Lost World.
The seminal 1925 stop-animation movie by Willis O’Brien -who also directed 1933’s King Kong -stars silent screen icons Bessie Love and Wallace Berry. The production comes to Dartington as part a South West and wider national tour organised by Bristol Silents.
John explained: “The film is ground-breaking, really important to the whole sci-fi genre. It’s also a great adventure with good characters and very impressive to watch.
“I’m hoping to re-imagine the score as if it was a 1980s sci-fi film, which is when I originally saw the film and when movies like Blade Runner and Star Wars were about. I want to bring The Lost World back into the fold of these classic sci-fi films.”
The Lost World with John Garden screens on Thursday, June 23 at 8pm. Tickets cost £8.50 but the Barn Cinema is offering D&CFilm readers a special £5 a ticket offer (tickets are limited to four per person). To take advantage of the offer call the box office on 01803 847070. See www.dartington.org/cinema
