Ran, one of the last films of cinema legend Akira Kurosawa, is loosely based on the King Lear, and getting a one-night only slot at the Exeter Picturehouse.
Ran means chaos or revolt, and according Akira “What has always troubled me about ‘King Lear’ is that Shakespeare gives his characters no past. … In Ran, I have tried to give Lear a history.”
The movie, made in 1985, is an epic which picked up an Oscar for its costume design and the Exeter Picturehouse says it has ‘one of the most enthralling battle sequences ever filmed’.
