David O Russell was one of those directors who hustled in a new age of US filmmaking, and taking a look at his back catalogue -Spanking the Monkey, Flirting with Disaster, Three Kings and I Heart Huckabees -it’s hardly surprising The Fighter has been treated with such acclaim.
The Fighter sees David team up again with Mark Wahlberg, for the bio-sports flick about the early career of professional boxer “Irish” Micky Ward. Christian Bale is on top form as the boxer’s older half-brother, grabbing an Oscar for his troubles, as Best Supporting Actor, with the Best Supporting Actress going to Melissa Leo, who plays mother Alice Ward. (Apparently, the first film to pick up the award for the two supporting roles since Hannah and Her Sisters in 1986.)
In all, the movie garnered seven Oscar nominations and plenty of other awards besides. All this, plus slow-mo punching and a training montage!
