Find out how YOU can get your hands on $200m to make a feature film
There’s plenty of reasons for Devon and Cornwall’s despondent directors to feel cheerful as more and more studios are hiring first-time helmers, says The Hollywood Reporter.
Citing newbies like Joseph Kosinski, who got $200m for Tron: Legacy, and Carl Rinsch, who got $170m for forthcoming samurai flick 47 Ronin, the mag reckons rookies who’ve honed their skills on FinalCut Pro, digital-video cameras and other sfx tools, prompt budget-cautious studios to adopt a ‘high-risk, high-reward’ strategy.
Michael Sugar, from management firm Anonymous Content, frothed: “It’s a reflection on the innovation of emerging filmmakers. You’re looking at people like Fede Alvarez, who made a short film [Panic Attack! – see video below] for $300, put it on YouTube, and it looks like it was made for $20m.’
Hullo. My name is Lee
Hullo...

Which prolly explains why Alvarez was recently snapped up by Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures to develop (inevitably) a sci-fi feature.
One might be tempted to dub it the ‘Gareth Edwards Effect’ -his recent sci-fi wheeze Monsters ‘only’ cost a few hundred thousand dollars but looked a lot more expensive. He’s now gearing up to direct Warner Bros’ Godzilla, which will, no doubt, see the beast mooching around in the background behind pretty people flirting.
THR reckons that rather than scrape together financing for a small indie, you should send a link to your short to someone in the industry. Apparently, the ‘heat generated from a viral explosion can put an auction-like target on a filmmaker’.
Ah, it really is as simple as that. Or possibly not… We can’t help but find it a little heartening, though -but then we’re a buncha starry-eyed simpletons.
