Academy Awards officials turn down Banksy disguise request
Bristol’s mysterious street artist Banksy says his request to turn up at this week’s Oscars in disguise has been declined.
The director, who’s up for a best documentary gong for Exit Through The Gift Shop. griped that Academy Award bigwigs said no cos they thought he’d inspire copycat gatecrashers.
Academy executive director Bruce Davis explained: “The fun but disquieting scenario is that if the film wins and five guys in monkey masks come to the stage all saying, ‘I’m Banksy’, who the hell do we give the award to?”
Well quite. In fact, we can imagine much the same thing happening next year when Nim Chimpsky from James Marsh’s Project Nim scoops best actor.
Hullo...

Banksy said in a statement: “This is a big surprise. I don’t agree with the concept of award ceremonies, but I’m prepared to make an exception for the ones I’m nominated for. The last time there was a naked man covered in gold paint in my house, it was me.”
Meanwhile, a few new Banksy works have sprung up around LA, including a depiction of drunken Mickey Mouse touching up a scantily-clad model. Sigh, Walt Disney’s head will be spinning in its cryogenic pot.
