Exeter-born producer Tom Atkinson, has developed an innovative way to reignite the glory years of British horror with his 10 Pound Horror Film. D+CFilm spoke to him.
The 10 Pound Horror Film is set to produce a grassroots horror film entirely through fans’ contributions.
How did you get the idea of the £10 horror film?
The 10 Pound Horror Film came about while I was lamenting the complexities of getting a Horror film made here in the UK. There is Film Industry support for ‘genre films’ such as Horror but the UK is not an easy place to produce a challenging film and I want The 10 Pound Horror Film to move away from the tired clichés and Americanised formats of most recent Horror films.
Why does horror lend itself to this kind of approach.
The Horror fan base is a great foundation for a project like this as they appreciate both the traditions of Horror and innovation. The Horror film is also about extremes of emotion and fantasy and is a great genre in which to try new ideas and push old boundaries so the unique production methods I am using for The 10 Pound Horror Film fit well with the existing genre and audience.
How many £10s do you need?
I need as many £10 as I can get! So anyone out there who wants to work in the Film Industry and would like to be a part of the most exciting Horror film production in the world needs to sign up to the website for only £10 and contact me to offer their skills and ideas. This really is a chance for people to work on a production and experience the making of a 21st century film.
What kinds of input with the subscribers get?
We have had amazing feed back from our subscribers and from the world press. There is definitely a hunger out there for something new and I aim for The 10 Pound Horror Film to advance the way films are developed and produced as well as they way people work in film and the audience involvement. People have unanimously praised the project and I need more enthusiastic fans and film makers to get involved and make this film.
I want anyone who has something to offer the film, from artist to writers to camera men to sign up for £10 as I really want to build a production crew from amongst the subscribers. I want to hear from anyone who has ideas and or strong opinions about Horror and will consider involving to anyone with a passion for film and who can offer constructive input. Subscribers from Devon and Cornwall will be rewarded with a free Frame Card or Promotional Poster! So sign up today!
What kind of film can we expect?
Expect the unexpected! I want the film to truly challenge the norm for Horror films but also stay true to the great history of the genre in the UK and around the world.
