Hot on the heels of his Best Film win in the FXhome awards, Ashley Wing has completed his latest film, a three-minute short called OMG about how our lives are controlled by mobile phones.
The film is co-directed by Ashley and Clayton Fussell, who worked together on A Hard Day’s Knight. On that occasion it was Ashley directing, with Clayton taking the lead role.
Ashley told D+CFilm: “After A Hard Day’s we both felt that a collaboration would be an interesting approach to the project.
“After a week of writing the final draft we decided one of us would act the part of the character Malcolm while the other would direct. It was in the early stages of pre-production we decided to cast for the role and co-direct.”
The story is about Malcolm, who sends a desperate text message, asking for forgiveness. When the response doesnʼt come he suspects the reason might be poor reception, and embarks on a frantic pilgrimage in pursuit of a better signal.
The kernel of the idea is that God (omnipotent force from above), has been replaced by the god of mobile phones -er, no, not you Mobli (practically omni-present with the geostationary satellite in low earth orbit as the force from above).
Either way, messages from ‘the beyond’ have always been good for a laugh
