The head of steam that is Slumdog Millionare meant South Devon’s Roger Deakins was content only with his eighth Oscar nomination as best cinematographer, rather than taking home the gold-coloured figurine.
Roger, who went to Torquay Boys Grammar School and has a home in Kingswear was nominated along with Chris Menges, for The Reader. Anthony Dod Mantle picked up the trophy for his work on Slumdog Millioniare.
But it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the cinematographer who is also a dab hand at still photography. He was a special advisor on WALL•E, which picked up the best animated feature award. And Kate Winslet took the best actress gong for her role in The Reader.
