It’s occasionally worthwhile falling back onto cliches, which is why it’s heartening to say the high quality of films created during the Two Short Nights 48-Hour Film challenge made it difficult to judge.

I was part of the judging panel which included other of the region’s filmic luminaries Jon Sealy and Russ Evans, and there were so many films in the frame for the top spot, that we were were splitting hairs over which film edged it, in our opinion.
The judges winner was The Optimist, by combo Paper Cup Productions, but thankfully, the audience could put their opinion across in the vote for the overall Audience Award.
Fifteen films were completed and handed in during the prohibitive time scale, which just goes to show the depth of filmmaking gusto and talent that’s around.
Two Short Nights kicked off with the D+CFilm open screening, and with a record number of more than 80 entries, it’s fair to say that the region’s reputation for film is growing, with local filmmakers being selected alongside international productions.
Two Short Nights continues today with a guerilla filmmaking course, music videos from Fresh Shorts and the Phoenix Media Centre’s bursary film screening tonight.

My friend entered one of these at the Kendal Mountain Film Festival and he won. I think it is such a good idea and all the crowd seemed to really enjoy the viewing of the short films and seeing the winner announced etc. I’m really glad to hear that it is done at other film festivals and associations are doing a similar thing.
