Paignton filmmaker Ashley Wing’s rather excellent Poppies has finally been accepted by the BBC Film Network – some nine months after its completion. Film Network is the BBC’s interactive showcase for new British filmmakers, screening three short films in broadband quality every week. Regular D+CFilm readers will already be familiar with Poppies. Not We’re sure you’ve seen it already but Paul Andrew Williams’s The Cottage is certainly worth another viewing when it premieres on Sky Movies, erm, Premiere at 10.15pm on Saturday (that’s August 1). After all, he’s one of us (gabba gabba hey). He has family in Combeinteignhead, and went to school in Teignmouth – he D+Cineastes have got about a month to get something together for the Big Lunch Young Filmmaker’s competition. Why bother? Well, the winner gets a big old cheque for £1,000 and their film could be shown on Channel Four. Run in association with the National Young Volunteering Service, Channel 4 BRITDOC Foundation, Shooting People You could be forgiven that throughout the whole of Devon and Cornwall there is only one person who’s making the lion shares of music videos. But for a change, we’ve taken our lead from Teignmouth band The Quails, who are set to play Istandbul on June 25 – but before they embark on their Deadly Illusions – HVX200 from Alex White on Vimeo. Our film of this week is from our very own D+CFilm Show director Alex White – Deadly Illusions, “the tale of a diva magician’s assistant and humble magician, she wants to leave his ‘going no-where’ show but he tries to persuade her to stay with This week’s Something For the Weekend music video for Obedientbone draws on a bit of history and brings us right up to date. Hugh Ellis, screenwriter of the award-winning film Summer, will be discussing the impact of new media and media ownership with actor and director Peter Ellis at the Exeter Phoenix on Wedensday, July 1 at 2pm. There’s a documentary filmmaking course as part of the Dartmoor Arts Summer School, between July 25 and July 31.
