It's a sad state, but these grants etc are ostensibly these days for filmmakers who are already established. The old support structures have perished.

But don't forget...you don't need anyone's permission to go out and make a film. Just make it. Punk DIY all the way. And you can pretty much guarantee that it will be better minus that sort of interference anyway.

Have to say I prefer Night to remember. They did a fantastic job with the limited effects and somehow made it more realistic.

For me though Kenneth More made that film. As with all the films he appeared in were just great.

James Cameron's version was good in that we now knew the ship had broken up on the surface. I think he made the love story with the idea it would keep the modern day audience entertained in case without it the film would be a flop and would not recoup the massive cost of production.

Couldn't agree more with this review. Saw this film at the weekend after reading positive reviews, and can't believe how bad it was. £8.85 well and truly wasted. There were a couple in there laughing at the parts where they thought they should laugh, very loudly so the rest of us were aware they 'got' it. Jesus wept.

Great article Sean, my initial knee-jerk reaction was that the film was a bit too psychologically brutal to be a 12A but I think really it's the certification, or rather people's misunderstanding of the certification that is to blame. It's a shoddy system to be honest.

Giving parents the choice to decide whether their child is 'mature' enough for the content is all well and good in theory but how are they to know the true nature of that content until they've experienced it themselves?

Great article, Sean! I would like to see 'The Raven', but I have to say I loved 'Drive'. I think it's a film which owes a great debt to Melville's, 'Le Samouraï' and his existential protagonist, Jef Costello. If you've never seen it, I can't recommend it more and it was a big influence upon Rowan Joffe's 'The American'.

Fantastic well written review Sean. We're so lucky here in Devon to have such great locations for shoots. I've yet to see War Horse, but have seen the trailer several times and the Dartmoor scenes do look incredibly atmospheric. And to think, Paignton followed the London world premier - bring it on!
