Bradford’s National Media Museum has specially selected Exeter filmmaker Ashley Thorpe’s Scayrecrow, The Screaming Skull and The Hairy Hands for an animated horror triptych at its 10th Fantastic Films Weekend.

The movies will be part of films screened under The British Horror Revival, and will be shown along side Plague of the Zombies, Hammer’s Karnstein Trilogy and the Vincentenary – a selection of films to honour the life and work of Vincent Price.

Tony Earnshaw, artistic director of the National Media Museum, called Ashley Thorpe ‘a unique talent in British genre production’.

Ashely said: “I’m very honoured for the animations to have been deemed worthy of being seen along side such legendary films. Extraordinary really.

“This festival is organised and patronised by dedicated aficionados of 1960s and 1970s horror from the Hammer and Amicus stables, all that rich brooding gothic stuff that feeds and influences my work… It’s such a wonderful event. It’s all my obsessions made manifest. I’ll be there as much as a fan as I will be as a filmmaker. I want to see everything!”

Ashley is currently working on his first feature Spring Heel Jack for Carrion Films and award-winning novelist/screenwriter/producer, Philip Nutman.

• Fantastic Films Weekend takes place at the National Media Museum from Friday, June 10 to Sunday, June 12

Exeter-based director Ashley Thorpe, the award wining Scayrecrow and The Hairy Hands, has been selected by producer Larry Fessenden (Wendigo) and Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead) for New York-based Horror Factory Glass Eye Pix to contribute a script to their macabre radio project Tales from Beyond the Pale.

In a bid to reanimate the glory days of radio chillers like Boris Karloff Presents, Ashley joins esteemed contributors such as Don Coscarelli (Phantasm), Paul Solet (Grace), Ti West (House of the Devil) and Jeff Buhler (The Midnight Meat Train) among other horror genre notables.

Ashley, of Carrion Film, told D+CFilm: “I was amazed that I was asked to be honest – astonished, actually. This is a Hollywood-level project with Hollywood-level writers and directors.

“My animations tend to be very visual and initially I didn’t honestly think I was up to the challenge. The radio format almost seemed to be the opposite of what I do. But I enjoyed the challenge. Having that comfort blanket of the visual pulled away and being forced to evoke horror in a different way speaks to all of my influences as a filmmaker. You can never show the most horrific thing in everyone’s minds, so let the audience conjure it.

“It was my first attempt at writing something so ambitious and involved. But I was amazed at how receptive to my ideas Larry and Glenn have been. Glenn really gets my influences (he’s a Terence Fisher devotee) and shares my enthusiasm for British mythology. The variety on this show is going to be amazing. You’re in for a real treat. It’s a project I’m deeply proud to be part of.”

There’s a strong D+CFilm connection with Alice in Wonderland, what with it being shot at Anthony House, Torpoint, which is why we’re cock-a-hoop to get our hands on a number interviews with cast and crew in advance of the DVD release on June 4. Here’s Mia Wasikowska, who plays Alice

How did you go about getting the accent for Alice?

MIA WASIKOWSKA: I had a lesson with a dialect coach and from then on it felt natural. When I take on a character with an accent then I can’t imagine them without that accent. Even when I was reading it in my head it was in an English accent. After a while it became natural. I didn’t listen to tapes. There is a lot of British film in Australia so we grew up listening to that and it wasn’t so hard to do the accent.

You seemed very determined to get this role?

MIA WASIKOWSKA: I sent an audition tape in February 2008 and ended up in June or July coming over to Britain and doing four more auditions with Tim before I got the role.

Didn’t you fly back and forth from Australia to the UK three times?

MIA WASIKOWSKA: Yeah, but I never really expected to get the role. Also you learn not to trust your feelings when you are in the strange period of auditions. It is all very up and down. You can audition, feel very confident and then not get the role. Then you can think the audition was the worst thing you ever did in your life and then you get the role. So you could analyze for weeks and months and it would still not make any sense.

What was it that Tim Burton saw in you?

MIA WASIKOWSKA: I’m not sure. I feel really lucky to be chosen by him. I really love his films. Edward Scissorhands is a really special film for me. Tim has this compassion for characters who are outsiders and he presents them in a way that is not stereotypical.

Had Tim seen any of your work?

MIA WASIKOWSKA: I’m not sure if he had seen In Treatment. He might have. I feel so lucky to have done In Treatment. It’s so rare to play a teenager who is so complex.

What was your research for Alice In Wonderland?

MIA WASIKOWSKA: My research was reading the books and reading about the books and looking at Lewis Carroll’s photography and collecting images from any of the illustrators. So Alice in the books was the backbone of the character but we really wanted to explore Alice as an older person.

Are you drawn to play damaged characters?

MIA WASIKOWSKA: I think so, for me they are really interesting characters. But I never felt a connection to the characters in teen movies. So I feel really lucky to have had the chance to portray characters who to me are more real and meaningful.

Tim says you are an old soul?

MIA WASIKOWSKA: There are a lot of different definitions of old soul. Alice has an awareness of what is going on around her and she is a deep feeling person. I did not grow up in movies or with an awareness of the celebrity culture. I grew up in a small city in Australia. My dad is a photographer and a collageist. We grew up in galleries and traveling around. My parents showed us interesting films. I lived for a year in Poland when I was eight years old and that was a similar age to Alice when she first went to Wonderland. At that age when you are removed from your world and placed in a different one you can completely absorb it. That was a very interesting time for me to experience another culture. I used to speak a little Polish but not very well.

You started in ballet, how did you move to film?

MIA WASIKOWSKA: I did dance very intensely for a number of years. From the age of eight to 14. Towards the end I was doing 35 hours a week. So I was always intensely into something. Before I decided to pursue acting, dance had become about trying to achieve physical perfection, which was so unattainable. Then I was smaller and less comfortable with myself and less happy with my body because I was always being confronted with my imperfections. At that time I was watching films that inspired me because they were about people’s imperfections. So I became interested in that and that was more true to me.

You like a challenge because after playing an iconic figure like Alice you are playing Jane Eyre?

MIA WASIKOWSKA: That’s right. I have kind of started preparing. I have re-read the book and want to be knowledgeable about all things connected to Jane Eyre.

How did you find the costumes for Alice?

MIA WASIKOWSKA: Even though Alice is from another time she is very much like a modern character. If you were to put her in our society she would thrive. I feel she is a modern girl stuck in another time. I love the costumes. Every one of them was so detailed and beautiful.

How do you feel about becoming a new Disney icon?

MIA WASIKOWSKA: I don’t know. I guess I have no choice.

What was the green screen experience like in making Alice In Wonderland?

MIA WASIKOWSKA: It was very strange. You have to bring a lot more energy and focus to working. You don’t realize how lucky you are to have an environment where you can get some feeling or have an actor from whom to bounce off. When you are acting opposite a tennis ball you have no idea what the Cheshire Cat will actually be doing. It’s about trusting Tim.

So was it with a sense of wonder that you finally saw the film?

MIA WASIKOWSKA: Definitely! It is being revealed to me in the same way that it has been revealed to everybody else. I had seen concept art but not the final thing and to see it together was wonderful.

A film enthusiast or filmmaker is needed as a coordinator for a free community cinema project in Exeter for socially marginalised people.

Open Cinema, which runs free community cinemas, is working with Exeter’s X centre, a support service for vulnerable young people and adults, to run a series of film events in the city.

The project needs a coordinator to set up a film screening (using one of Open Cinema’s specially programmed film seasons), welcome and chat to members about the film, supervise Open Cinema volunteers, lead post-film discussions and take requests for future films to screen.

It would take around three hours per week (one evening).

The role requires someone who is passionate about film and able to share this interest with others, especially with young people. Experience of working with young people and teenagers would be very helpful, and a CRB check is essential.

Eleanor Dean of Open Cinema told D+CFilm: “For the right candidate, coordinating the project will be an exciting and rewarding experience, as they’ll be helping us to deliver a great cinema service that will bring film into the lives of local young people.

“We also urgently need local filmmakers and film industry professionals who would like to run filmmaking projects at the new centre, helping members to make their own short films. Any local filmmakers who would like to screen their own work and talk about it at the centre would also be very welcome.”

If you’re interested in the voluntary co-ordinator role or running filmmaking projects, contact Eleanor Dean at Open Cinema, on eleanor@opencinema.net

Oscar- and BAFTA-winning documentary Man On Wire, directed by Cornwall’s James Marsh, has come in at number 22 in the Observer Film Magazine’s Best British Films 1984-2009 poll.

The list was compiled from the opinions of more than 60 experts – directors, screenwriters, actors, critics – and a few smart ‘outsiders’ (eg, novelist Jonathan Coe and musician Nitin Sawhney).

Other films given the thumbs-up in the poll include Trainspotting, Naked, Croupier, Slumdog Millionaire, and Sexy Beast.

Man On Wire looks at tightrope walker Philippe Petit’s daring, but illegal, high-wire routine performed between New York’s World Trade Center’s twin towers in 1974; what some consider ‘the artistic crime of the century’.

James was born in Truro and his younger brother in Redruth. Despite moving to London when he was four, he returned to Sennen every school holiday and was last here two years ago. He now lives in Copenhagen.

He recently said in an interview: “I’m very proud of my Cornish roots – my grandmother was a George; half of the people buried in Sennen graveyard are Georges.

“As the nominations were read out for the Oscar, I took myself back to the days when I stayed at my grandmother’s house in Sennen. When I’m under pressure I always think of walking to Gwenver beach, just around the corner from Sennen, on a beautiful spring morning.

“I’d love to come back and make a film in Cornwall – I’m just waiting for the right story. I know the landscape and light so well, it would be a wonderful place to base a film.”

James is also responsible for 1999′s acclaimed documentary Wisconsin Death Trip and 2005′s underrated The King, starring Gael García Bernal and William Hurt.

More recently he directed the 1980 section of Channel Four’s critically-lauded Red Riding trilogy.

But what’s next for the talented director? He said: “Well, I have got a Hollywood agent now! It’s a bit too early to say how it will affect things really. I can’t see myself working in Hollywood as there are so many rules to adhere to, but you never know.

“I’m not sure Hollywood is a world I would thrive in. You don’t have that freedom of filmmaking that I’m used to.”

Crediton’s Harry Treadaway stars in Red Road director Andrea Arnold’s latest movie, Fish Tank, next month.

Harry, who went to Sandford School and Crediton’s Queen Elizabeth’s Community College, appears alongside Inglourious Basterds’ Michael Fassbender and 17-year-old newcomer Katie Jarvis, who was apparently cast after being spotted arguing with her boyfriend in a train station!

The family drama focuses on an alienated Essex teenager and the disruptive effect her mother’s new boyfriend has on their close family life.

Arnold’s debut short, Wasp, won the Academy Award in 2005, while her first feature, Red Road, was given the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2006.

Fish Tank scooped the Jury Prize at Cannes this year and was described by The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw as ‘another highly intelligent, involving film from one of the most powerful voices in British cinema’.

Katie Jarvis recently won Best British Performance at this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Harry Treadaway’s professional debut was Brothers of the Head, a feature film about conjoined twin brothers in a punk rock band.

Since then he’s appeared in the Joy Division biopic Control, The Disappeared, and Gil Kenan’s City of Ember.

Fish Tank is released in the UK on September 11. RSS readers should click through to watch the trailer.

Holy cow – now this looks like a movie! Yes, the extended redband teaser gubbins for Scott Stewart’s Legion has hit the interweb, and it rocks.

The story sees God sending a legion of avenging angels to Earth to bring about the Apocalypse – imagine him shaking a big celestial Etch-A-Sketch…

However, Archangel Michael (a non-ginger Paul Bettany rediscovering his Gangster No.1 intensity) has got something to say about it.

He plops to earth, hacks off his wings, and locates the not-quite born Second Coming, who is currently hanging-out in the womb of Mojave desert diner waitress Charlie (Adrianne Palicki).

At the diner, they hook up with Dennis Quaid and Tyrese (yeah, thanks for nothing) and get ready for things to get a bit Rio Bravo on their collective ass.

Let the terminally wet be warned – there’s some potty language and grue in there. Hey, like that’s a bad thing! Oh, and let’s pretend that D+CFilm’s not waaay behind everyone else with this news, eh?

Legion hits the UK on March 5 – more than a month after it screens in the States. Thought that sort of thing didn’t happen anymore. Sigh.

We’ve just been watching Quentin Tarantino introducing Death Proof on Sky Movies. What can we say – there’s not much on telly tonight.

We were anticipating the usual anodyne ‘this is my film – hope you enjoy it’ kinda crap, but this was actually fairly interesting.

Quentin didn’t really bother getting into the specifics of Death Proof (‘It’s not for the chicken to speak of his own soup’) – instead he took the opportunity to name his favourite 20 movies released since 1992 (the year he became a director).

Given that we were expecting him to come up with a buncha outre choices, we were pretty surprised at how many films on the list we had seen (all of them, we think). Perhaps he doesn’t have time to watch the more obscure efforts anymore – if indeed he ever did.

Anyhoo, we’ve typed them into a list for you – dunno why but we thought you might have something to say. What would you add? What would you remove?

The roundup sounds about right to us, but we always baulk at any attempt to put together a ‘pantheon of greatest movies’. The Godfather might be the ‘best’ film ever released, but Die Hard is the movie we’ve seen the most. So go figure.

(And yes, we do realise that Die Hard is technically flawless, shot by one of the world’s greatest ever action directors with one of the world’s best DoPs and a star-making turn from a hugely charismatic lead – we were just trying to make a point.)

Click through to see Tarantino’s list.

1. Battle Royale (Kinji Fukasaku)
2. Anything Else (Woody Allen – very strange choice!)
3. Audition (Tarantino credits this to Takashi Miike – twas actually Gyeong-min Lee)
4. The Blade (Hark Tsui)
5. Boogie Nights (Paul Thomas Anderson)
6. Dazed And Confused (Richard Linklater)
7. Dogville (Lars Von Trier)
8. Fight Club (David Fincher)
9. Friday (F. Gary Gray)
10. The Host (Joon-ho Bong)
11. The Insider (Michael Mann)
12. Joint Security Area (Chan-wook Park)
13. Lost In Translation (Sophia Coppola)
14. The Matrix (Wachowski brothers)
15. Memories Of Murder (Joon-ho Bong)
16. Police Story 3 (Stanley Tong)
17. Shaun Of The Dead (Edgar Wright)
18. Speed (Jan De Bont)
19. Team America: World Police (Trey Parker & Matt Stone)
20. Unbreakable (M. Night Shyamalan)

A documentary created through Exeter Phoenix’s short film bursary scheme has been shortlisted for the prestigious Virgin Media Shorts awards.

Andrew Oxley and David Williams’ flick, titled Making The Difference, is one of the twelve finalists selected from 2,000 entries by a judging panel including Hollywood actor/director Kevin Spacey.

It will be shown in 214 cinemas nationwide for a year and will appear on TV, online and on mobile internet.

In September, the final winner will be announced and Spacey will present them with their wife’s head in a box (not strictly true).

Making The Difference is a short documentary which features people discussing their love of tea (the drink – not the posh word for dinner).

The film won the 2008 Phoenix Media Bursary Film award and 2008 Audience award at Exeter Phoenix’s annual Two Short Nights film festival.

Andrew Oxley is an independent filmmaker based in Exeter. He has collaborated with David Williams on a number of short documentaries celebrating notions of Englishness.

Their previous film, White English Men, has been screened at numerous short film festivals and has won several local and international awards.

Click here right now to view (and vote for) Making The Difference.

Stay tuned to D+CFilm over the next couple of weeks for news of this year’s Two Short Nights festival.

Well, this behind the scenes footage of Paignton filmmaker Ashley Wing’s new sci-fi short Fracture looks like just the most amount of fun a D+Cineaste could ever hope to experience.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that even the biggest movies are actually put together by people like us – massive film fans.

One thing’s for sure, we can’t wait to see what kinda world Ash has created. So far it looks very much in the George Lucas (by way of John Carpenter) ‘used-universe’ style but we shall have to see.

We were gonna drag the footage over two days but we kinda figured that you lot would be clever enough to find Part Two on YouTube if you really wanted to.

Perhaps you could watch Part One today and Part Two tomorrow? Yknow, it’s really up to you.

Click through to watch the footage.

Don’t forget Ash is looking for skilled artists to help with 3D model work, texture work, compositing, 3D tracking and matte painting on the flick. Click here for details.

Oh, and click here if you wanna check out some of the concept art from the film.

Stay tuned to D+CFilm over the coming weeks for more news about Ashley Wing and Fracture.

Paignton filmmaker Ashley Wing (he of Poppies, Hard Day’s Knight, and Between The Lines fame) has got in touch to tell us about an absolutely stonking opportunity for all you talented and arty D+Cineastes out there.

What is the opportunity? Here is the opportunity. (And yes, Ashley does speak in italics.)

We are in search of confident, skilled artists for 3D model work, texture work, compositing, 3D tracking and matte painting on our current short sci-fi drama Fracture.

We’ve been working on this for about nine months, and we’re nearing the end of a very long post session. We still have quite a few shots left so it’s a final push to get the work done on the deadline.

Want to work with a team of artists from around the world? Well, let’s take it one step at a time and start with the synopsis.

On the bleak and unforgiving surface of a distant world a fragile mining base stands isolated, relentlessly battered by brutal storms. Its small crew have known loneliness, love and betrayal in their time there, and in such a claustrophobic environment secrets can’t stay hidden forever.

All artists involved will be offered invites to the UK, London premiere and provided a finished DVD on completion.

Due to the nature of the short being a community project run by Fxhome, work is unpaid, but it does represents an excellent challenge and opportunity for those looking to add to their portfolio and work credential.

In-bloody-deed. If we had any talent whatsoever we’d apply immediately. But how do you apply? Ah, funny you should ask. Send examples of your previous work to wing6704@yahoo.com (mark the subject field ‘Artist – Fracture’).

Stay tuned to D+CFilm over the next few days for more concept art (a posh way of saying ‘lovely pictures’) from Fracture, as well as behind the scenes footage.

<g:plusone href="http://www.devon-cornwall-film.co.uk/2009/08/03/aviva-advert-stars-paul-whitehouse-as-a-plymouth-argyle-fan/" size="small" annotation="none" ></g:plusone>

The new Aviva advert, which features Fast Show star Paul Whitehouse as a Plymouth Argyle fan, is the talk of the interweb.

Whitehouse wears this season’s shirt (we’ll take their word for it) and talks (in a very bizarre accent) about how expensive it is for him, Big Dave, Burd, Buey and Janner to get to Argyle away games – or indeed, the famously expensive Argyle home games, one assumes.

In short (and this is very short cos we don’t have any more details about the ad) it’s all very strange but seems to have got people talking. A bit like Pants Man.

We think the biggest shock is hearing a West Country accent in the national media. Most Plymothians appear flattered that their existence has finally been recognised.

As Goldinho posts on YouTube: ‘hahahaha i wanna say we don’t sound like that but we do!!! geddon bey!!!!!!’

What do you think? Should we be offended or flattered? Comments below, please! If you’re reading this on RSS, click through to watch the advert.
