The Maccabees: film to coincide with new release to be shot in Devon

Casting call for a short film being made for the release of The Maccabees’ new album. Filmed on Dartmoor and the surrounding areas and directed by rising stars Charlie and Joe, who are looking for the following:

Friday, Octotber 14
Merlin’s Cave, Tintagel
1 x Young Boy. under 16 but must look young – interesting/gawky face etc etc. Think Gummo (the film)

Saturday, October 15
Dartmoor
2 x Adult men, 20-30 years old, ideally with some sort of fight training, or if not, at least willing to play at fighting. – One will only be needed in the morning, the other will be needed in the morning and that night.
1 x Older man, ideally slightly gnarled and wizened, 50-70 years old.

Sunday, October 16
Dartmoor
1 x Adult man 25-40 years old. Slightly older looking than the fighters.

Blight: filmmaker Ray Smith is re-shooting the trailer for his sci-fi movie Blight

Director Ray Smith is preparing to shoot a new trailer for his sci-fi movie Blight, in Bideford, and Ray is looking for locations and extras.

Ray told D&CFilm: “I’m going to shoot in Bideford but am seeking anywhere I can make look like the locations I need for a super-duper new trailer. These will need to be low-to-no-cost and be suitable for looking like a military base, a medical centre, a boardroom and a field of maze or corn, if there’s any not harvested yet.

“I’m looking for a few guys that could pass for Marines too. It will look similar to certain PS3 games. Also I will need a couple of ‘Infected’ medical guinea-pigs too. I’ve already cast a female model as one of them as this is the hook for the new trailer.”

The premise of the trailer is that the soldiers are chasing people through the field at dusk.

The aim is to make a new trailer for the movie to help grab the interest of a producer and some big name actors – a distributor is already showing some interest apparently.

Chagford Filmmaking Group: still time to audition for its latest film

Chagford Filmmaking Group is holding auditions for its next film, and there’s still time to put your name forward.

Hot on the heels of their inter-continental movie, Sir Lanval, the Chagford Filmmaking Group is embarking on its new flick, The Ballad of Mary Whyddon.

It’s set in Devon set during the Civil War, and their shoots are renowned as happy affairs.

“We hear so many horror stories from actors about cattle market auditions, so we try to make the whole process as welcoming as possible,” said director, Elizabeth-Jane Baldry.

Full cast required for animated short in Exeter/Devon area

The Grobler is a part animation, part live-action, fantasy short, funded by the Exeter Phoenix Bursary 2011. The film is essentially a dark fable, told by an old man to his grandchild, to deter him from entering the gloomy forest alone, complete with tree goblins, forest bugs, and grab happy branches.

The ‘fable’ section of the film will be stop-motion animated, but using full scale sets and real actors, creating a unique blend of the organic, rickety, aesthetic that we all love about traditional stop-motion whilst being able to tap into real human emotion.

Live-action Roles

THOMAS
Thomas is the main protagonist and is generally a good natured and polite child, but when boredom strikes he can find himself getting into mischief from time to time. Being an only child with no other children nearby to play with, he takes to exploring, and dreams of escaping the clutches of the town and heading out in search of the places and characters that he’s heard about and read about in his story books and comics.
Playing age: 9-10
Days Required: 1-2

GRANDPA
Grandpa is a retired widower and is the steady constant in Thomas’ life, who’s parents work long hours away from home. He is a lovable, cuddly looking man who wears colorful jumpers and smokes a pipe. He very much plays the good cop role, rarely telling Thomas off, but tries to subtly influence his behavior through his bedtime stories.
Playing age: 65-70
Days Required: 1-2

MOTHER
Thomas’ mother is a strong, hardworking woman who works long hours to keep a roof over the families heads. Tom’s misadventures are a constant worry to her, and she tries in vain to discipline him in the short amount of time she spends with him, but ultimately has to accept that she’s second in command to Grandpa.
Playing Age: 28-32
Days Required: 1-2

Animation Roles

Actors will be required to effectively “act” in slow-motion, requiring a great deal of concentration and energy.

THE GROBLER
The infamous Grobler is the main protagonist in the film. He lives in the dark forest and loves to feed on soft-boned creatures. Physically, he is tall and gangly, and has the pointy facial features of a goblin. Bits of twig and moss grow from his scalp and chest. He is extremely well-spoken and has a sneaky, intelligent persona.
Days Required: 4-5
Playing Age: Doesn’t matter but you will need to be physically fit

CHARLIE
Charlie is a fictional character and is effectively Tom’s projection of himself into his Grandpa’s story. So he shares many of the same characteristics, in particular his love for exploration, but is a little older, braver (or stupider?) and better kitted out than the real Tom. He is the lead character in terms of screen time.
Days Required: 5-7
Playing age: 16 (Could be as old as early 20s if you have a young face)

Auditions for Chagford Filmmaking Group’s new movie, based on a Dartmoor folktale

Chagford Filmmaking Group: looking for people to audition for its lastest enchanting movie

After last year’s epic and magical French/English movie, for 2011 the Chagford Filmmaking Group are creating a film from a Dartmoor folktale: The Ballad of Mary Whyddon, and are looking for people to fill the roles.

The story is set in October 1641 when England is on the brink of civil war. “It’s an absolutely stupendous tale based right here in the very community in which we live,” said director Elizabeth-Jane Baldry.

Auditions are being held in Chagford (TQ13 8AZ) in the afternoon and early evening of July 15.

Email them (info@fairytalefilms.co.uk) to book your time, and you’ll be filled you in with details of where to come. In the friendly spirit of our non-profit group, everyone taking part in this film is a volunteer. The shooting dates are October 23-29

Female Roles:
Girls aged 16 – 23 (five parts, including our eponymous heroine, Mary Whyddon)
Young women aged 25 – 35 (two parts)
Older women aged 45 – 75 (three parts)

Male Roles:
Young men aged 20 – 35 (four parts)

La Legende Dali: Tom Austin, who was responsible for the award-winning La Legende Dali, is after actors and crew for his latest short

Award-winning Devon filmmaker Tom Austin is making a new short and is looking for a number of actors and actresses to play both small speaking and walk-on parts.

Filming will take place in and around Torbay and Newton Abbot during the week beginning Monday, June 6 for a week. You would only be required for one day. Refreshments and a DVD copy of the film will be provided to participants.

Dog Collar Criminal is one of the successful commissions from Exeter Phoenix Digital’s Green Light scheme awarded to writer/director Tom Austin (winner of both jury and audience awards at Two Short Nights Film Festival 2009 for his Exeter Phoenix Digital Short Film Commission La Legende_Dali).

It’s the story of one Devon man’s journey from loved and respected pillar of society, to petty criminal, to long-term prison inmate. He also just happens to be the parish vicar.

Speaking parts are: Saville, an antiques dealer in his 50s; a rotund Police Constable in his 20s; Susie Trapp, an attractive woman in her 20s; Mr O’Connor (walk-on) and Mrs O’Connor, a couple in their 30s; a female bank assistant 25-35.

Non-Speaking roles are for two female, one male bank staff 20s-40s; four bank customers, 2 x police officers 25-40; and 10 x M/F 11-75 passers-by, pedestrians, shop browsers etc.

The film is set in the mid 1970s, so we are looking for neutral clothes as opposed to modern or specifically 70s fashion.

They’re Coming: John Tomkins’ action thriller, which is shooting this summer in Devon, is still looking for a leading man

Action thriller They’re Coming, the latest project from filmmaker John Tomkins, shoots in Devon this summer. And it’s still looking for a leading man!

Here’s the set-up. One day, David York agrees to meet his friend Robert at a local bar to discuss a business deal. During their meeting David receives a phone call. The tone of the call forces David to end the meeting abruptly, and he runs home, only to find his wife Amanda has disappeared along with all his belongings. On one wall of the flat are inscribed the letters T.C. So begins David’s search for his wife. Aided by Amanda’s friend Sarah, they find nothing is what is seems and that trust no one is the most important lesson of all!

Following a round of successful auditions at the Exeter Phoenix earlier this month (featuring D&CFilm’s Paul Atkins and Sean Wilson), which resulted in the casting of actors Lexie Carducci, James Cotter and Hazal Han, the production is still looking for a leading man to play central character, David York; ideally, an athletic, physical type, aged from 20 to 30, dark haired and charismatic.

Mrs Lustleigh’s Fancies: Oddbodies, the team behind the award-winning Mrs Lustleigh’s Fancies, are looking for four female actors for their next short film

Oddbodies, the creative team behind the award-winning Mrs Lustleigh’s Fancies are looking to cast four female parts for their next short film The Nature of Angrove (shooting the first week in July at their base on the edge of Dartmoor).

The film will follow Angrove Laxeter, a shy and unassuming 30 year old, lives at home with his widowed and domineering mother Ashleen. Living in an ‘upper middle class’ suburb, Angrove works as an accountant, and in his spare time practices magic tricks.

Afraid her son will never marry, Ashleen signs him up to the dating agency Nature of Love. Roger Ranthorn, the oily proprietor, takes a personal interest in all his clients and views Angrove as a particular challenge.

A series of ‘dates’ ensue, held at the Laxeter’s home and overseen by Ashleen. Angrove endures these mis-matches, coming alive only when performing his wholly unappreciated (and occasionally inappropriate) magic tricks.

Finally, after a succession of candidates (approved by Ashleen yet clearly unsuited to Angrove), Cherry the maid reveals her hitherto suppressed feelings. Angrove has finally met his love match. Ashleen however, is less than happy with his choice and tries to snuff out this romance before it has begun.

Emboldened by his feelings for Cherry, Angrove decides to take matters into his own hands, with extraordinary and magical results…

Auditions for John Tomkins’ new action-thriller They’re Coming

They’re Coming: four leads, five supporting and 40 extra roles are up for grabs

Like An Angel director and all-round good egg John Tomkins will be holding casting auditions this month for his new action-thriller, They’re Coming.

Yapping to D&CFilm at the CINE networking event on Saturday, John said the intention is to make ‘a rocking piece of cinema and send the finished picture to a few film festivals as well’.

Shooting this summer in Exeter and Torbay, the flick is about David York whose wife unexpectedly disappears. On the wall of her flat are the letters ‘T.C.’. York goes in search of his missus, helped by her chum Sarah. Needless to say, he should trust no one cos nothing is what it seems, etc etc.

There are four lead roles, five supporting roles, and around 40 extra parts up for grabs. Auditions take place at the Exeter Phoenix Black Box on Saturday, April 16.

Casting Call: Torquay’s Lily Cole was in Sally Potter’s film Rage, now Sally is looking for two teenagers for her next movie

Sally Potter – who directed Torquay’s Lily Cole in her last film – is looking for two teenage girls, aged 14 to 18, for the leading roles in her latest feature film.

Sally’s production company Adventure Pictures has created an open casting forum on YouTube and are inviting interested and aspiring actors to upload a video audition before inviting the best ones to come to London to audition.

Rather than relying on the usual casting agents or drama schools, the production company wants to use social media to find new and interesting actors who we could not otherwise access.

The two aspiring actresses will be playing the age of 15-16, for her Sally’s 60s period film.

Sally has worked with stars including Johnny Depp, Tilda Swinton, Judi Dench and Jude Law on her previous films, including the Oscar-nominated Orlando.

Adventure Pictures is inviting those interested to post a short video of themselves performing part of a scene from the film, and the best ones will be invited to an audition in London.

Actor Sara Hooppell is on the look out for film roles in the South West

Sara Hooppell: “Because my acting has been so predominately theatre based I am looking to gain experience in acting for film”

Not every up-and-coming actor can boast taking lessons from Sir Peter Hall, or treading the boards with Dame Judy Dench, but that’s exactly what Sara Hooppell can claim as she’s back in Devon looking to build on her experience by finding roles in some of the region’s films.

The acting bug bit early for Sara. She told D&CFilm: “I have been acting since I was about 10 years old when I joined the Exeter Little Theatre Company.

“Since then I have Studied Drama at Kingston University and have an MA in Classical Theatre.”

It was while she was at the Rose Theatre in Kingston upon Thames that she was taught by Sir Peter Hall, and she took part in the a performance A Midsummers Nights Dream alongside Judi Dench.

Sara’s also been in Greed a play by Ben Clare, performed at the Wimbledon Studio, and was in Face in the Crowd, which ran for a month at the Edinburgh Festival, winning a nomation for Best Ensemble by The Stage.

Sara said: “Because my acting has been so predominately theatre based I am looking to gain experience in acting for film – so if there are any film makers around the South West that are looking for actresses that would be brilliant!

“I have a good ear for accents and have worked as an extra on several productions.”

Tuesday 21st: a male and a female are needed for a new short film to be shot in Devon, which explores friendship, mental well being and suicide

A male and a female actor – both aged 25-35 – are needed for short film to be filmed in Devon, at Budleigh Salteron near Exeter.

Called Tuesday 21st, the film has been written by Ben Borley and will be directed by David Salas – both award-winning filmmakers – and asks the question what it means to be a friend.

As part of a wider project in using media to address Mental Health issues in a new, relevant and engaging way Tuesday 21st is a film that seeks to ask questions and promote debate about suicide and mental well being in general.

The story follows a man and a women who are drawn back to a beach they used to frequent, hoping to discover a clue that will unlock the suicide of a friend.

Tormented by his death and their own roles in his self-annihilation they fight among themselves. Their relationship poisoned by an event that neither one of them can understand or accept. As dogs walkers pass them and children play they try to find a way to reconcile their own friendship in the face of a decision and a death that has made them question their own moral natures and whether they could or did do enough.

Tuesday 21st is a short film commissioned and funded by the Devon RRIG. It will be used as part of a slate of films looking at provoking open debate about mental health issues. Made by a crew of internationally award-winning film-makers, the film will be of a high technical quality and will be submitted to Short Film Festivals worldwide.

There’s no pay, but food and travel expenses will be available for the successful applicant.

The film will shot over four days between Thursday, February 10 and Sunday, February 12.

Extras needed for North Devon shoot

Trinity X Productions are shooting in North Devon in February and are finding it hard to get hold of extras.

The team needs eight extras, male and female of all ages to be the extended family of the Indian/Asian leading male.

As with most films, this is on a micro budget, so there’s no big buck – but there is a daily rate and food!

You’ll need to be available for about five days work.

Trinity X have a number of films and awards under belt since starting up in 2009, and the filmmaking core of writer/director Trevor Garlick and producer Paul Hopper have a commitment to developing new talent and new stories.

Chelsea Smile: Filmmaker Ray Smith is looking for cast and crew for his dark gangster sci fi movie

Ray Smith is looking for characters for his new film, Chelsea Smile – a revenge thriller with a Delicatessen look and feel, with a dark sci-fi air.

Ray, a photographer and former script reader, is after character actors for the movie.

And to get the gangster movie in full swing, he’s also after some crew: a sound department and technicians experience in green screen, a red camera and someone to help out with the score.

The story will follow two teenage villains as they guide a no-nonsense debt collector through London’s criminal underworld in the hunt for his son’s murderer.

As you would expect from a photographer, Ray’s got a strong visual style – pop along to his photography site to see a sample of his work.

Casting call for short film in Cornwall

Two talented male actors of around 20 are required for the forthcoming short film The Final Word, sponsored by Channel 4 as a part of the My One Word competition.

Synopsis: A soldier awakens on a deserted beach to encounter his enemy for the last time.

Filming will be outside on February 2, 3, 4 in Cornwall on a beach and it will be a physically demanding and potentially freezing shoot.

The film is three minutes in length and consists of only one line of dialogue. This will be a great piece for the showreel and a chance to work with an ‘up-and-coming director’.

Director Andy Marsh told D+CFilm: “We have a very limited budget, so this will be an expenses only role, but will provide a great opportunity as a portfolio piece.

“I look forward to hearing from you and apologise in advance if I can’t get back to everybody.”
