It’s a pretty sad week for D+Cineasts – maverick director Robert Altman died on Monday, aged 81.
He was particularly known for a run of fantastic flicks in the 70s, including MASH and Nashville, but D+C first came to know his work through his later efforts The Player and Short Cuts. [Read more…] about Robert Altman RIP
While we’re waiting for the results of this year’s inaugeral Motionplymouth Movie Competition, you can check out one of the entries here.
Directed by teenager Ben Cornish, it sees him and his skateboarding pals doing their thang around Plymouth, accompanied by a tune from the excellent Elliot Whale Boy. Apparently, he stayed up til 3am most mornings, editing the film on his computer. Puh, teenagers, eh? Where do they get the energy?
Anyway, we wish we could go into a little more detail about the three minute film, called At Any Time, but we couldn’t get it to work on our RealPlayer.
We pretty much hate skaters anyway, so it’s probably ‘all for the best’. Still, yous lot might like it.

As a rule, James Bond flicks don’t usually look like they’ve been shot by Carol Reed. But that’s exactly the impression given by Casino Royale, opening with a grainy black and white prologue, featuring 007 beating the shit outta some guy in the bogs. The hapless fellow must have used the last loo roll, poor blighter.
Now that it’s over, and you can see the full extent of its tracks, you realise the scope of the Teignbridge-based (though international) Vanland project from Blind Ditch was far greater than its two-berth dimensions. We hope to get some films on the site, but shh, we haven’t even asked yet.

The fifth Cornwall Film Festival is about to come knocking at your door and dragging you out to the pictures. In just a short space of time (it started in 2002 for those who don’t want to count backwards), it has established itself as quite the focal point for new talent and super features. But what makes this the real bees knees is that there will be more than 50 films (by my ready reckoning anyway) written, produced or directed by Cornish film makers.
And if all this is making you kick up your heels and lament your lack of contribution, fear not, the organisers have thought of that and created an outleft for budding mobile phone film makers in The Beautiful Phone Edit.

The Fallen Idol (PG) Despite sounding like the name of your best friend’s mum, Carol Reed is actually the director of this classic British drama. And he’s a man!
Shanghai Dreams (15) Award-winning tale from Xiaoshuai Wang. Let’s hear you pronounce that, Captn!TAVISTOCK WHARF
The Black Dahlia (15) Disturbing stuff from director Brian De Palma – yes, his
cack-handed homages to Hitchcock really do turn the stomach. Bleugh!
Snow Cake (15) Sigourney Weaver pretends to be autistic in this heartwarming drama. Of course, she’s an excellent driver, Charlie Babbitt.
Crossing The Bridge (12A) A look at the music scene in Istanbul. Um, we’ll stick with Girls Aloud, if that’s alright ‘by you’.
A Scanner Darkly (15) An animated Keanu Reeves (hey, there’s a first time for everything) gets, like, totally bummed out in this excellent screen version of Philip K. Dick’s paranoid wheeze. Uh, dude.

Transamerica (15) That woman from Desperate Housewives pretends to be a man who’s pretending to be a woman. High concept, or whut!
