View From Here 2008

Welcome to The View from Here, a celebration of moving image in South Devon.

This year the ground-breaking film festival brings events to showcase every aspect of the rich filmmaking talent in the region.

There are filmmaking workshops, films for new audiences, young people’s films, films about filmmakers, films about bands and a talent showcase in front of industry professionals. In fact, every aspect of moving image will have a place.

Young People’s Film Gala, Monday December 1

The Young People’s Film Gala is a celebration of what schools, colleges, youth clubs and young people on their own have been creating throughout the region.

In View, Tuesday December 2
Various locations 7pm
Short local films go out and about and settle down in comfortable locations for an evening of culture. Between 7pm and 9pm a selection of films will run in bars, pubs and cafes throughout the region. So far, you’ll be able to catch the flicks in Torquay at the Blue Walnut Cafe, Newton Abbot at the Jolly Farmer and Totnes at the Castle Inn. Other venues to follow are The Bay Horse, in Totnes, and the Pig and Whistle at Littlehempston. FREE

Watching the filmmakers, Wednesday December 3

RedMunkey Show Reel 2008

Torbay filmmaker John Tompkins has been putting together his first feature, followed each step of the way by another Torbay filmmaker Darren Jones, whose documentary will chart the film’s progress until its eventual premiere. Beset by the usual problems of small scale production, John has also endured a devastating fire at his flat – but the filmmaking goes on. This is a tale of creativity in adversity and against all the odds. Darren will show extracts from the documentary along with other examples of his work around The Bay.

Heavy Load, Thursday December 4
Alexandra Theatre, Newton Abbot, 7pm


Winner of the BritDocs Audience Award 2008, Heavy Load is a film about happiness, which follows punk band Heavy Load – a unique outfit made up of musicians with and without learning disabilities. Shot over two years as the band record their first album The Queen Mother’s Dead, the film is a comedy of conflicting ambitions, capturing the sweat and romance of playing in a band as they move out of the ghetto of disability club nights to test whether their dreams can survive in the mainstream.
The film will be presented by director Jerry Rothwell

Talent Showcase, Friday December 5
Coombeshead Theatre, Newton Abbot, 7pm
Filmmaker Peter Richardson has spent a career scaling the height of filmmaking to Hollywood blockbuster, catch some of his nuggets of advice as he presents a evening of the best work the region can provide. He will be just one of the industry professionals who will be on hand to offer their insights in how to get on in one of the toughest and sought-after careers.
