South Devon filmmaker Robin Whenary has been awarded the Grand Prix diploma from the 40th KRAF Short Film Festival, in Rijeka, Croatia.
The jury gave Robin the Grand Prix for four of his early shorts: Fear, Motion, Seeing and The Boy, the Bike, and the Apple.
Robin told D+CFilm: “To be recognised over some larger-scale, bigger-budget amateur and student films, and in its 40th year, is especially nice.
“In their letter they wrote: ‘For the first time in 40 years of this review we have experienced that one author won the Grand Prix with four extraordinary films, for which the jury couldn’t decide which one to exclude from such an award or to proclaim the best’.”
Liburnija Film, the organisation running it, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. It was set up when Croatia was one-sixth of the Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia, so faced numerous bureaucratic challenges just to exist, but in the late ’80s they even survived the turmoil of Croatia’s War for Independence, and the festival is now becoming more international.
