Two Short Nights at the Exeter Phoenix is coming, and the event launches with a Get into Film Media Mash Up for filmmakers and media students trying to find their way into the film industry. We’ve got in touch with a couple of those on the panel to find out what they’ll be talking about. First up Ashley Thorpe of Carrion Films, who won Media Innovations Award for Independent Cinema, and whose latest film the Hairy Hands will premiere at the festival.
We asked Ashley what he’d be talking about at the Two Short Nights Media Mash Up: “I’m aiming to give a little A-Z of how the animations are conceived and constructed with a detailed analysis of some of the techniques I use to ‘bring the stories to life’. I’ve been asked a lot about the actual techniques I’ve used to make the films in the past, so this is an opportunity for people to get a peek behind the curtain at how they are actually made.
“If anyone has a question, I am more than happy to answer it. Will it dispel the myth? I doubt it. The films are made in such an organic way that upon completion I often look back on them and wonder how on earth I did some of it myself!
“I’ve often said that they might look complicated but they really aren’t, in fact their construction, though time consuming, is very straight forward, so there’ll be a few clips, a few deconstructions of shots and effects with the hope of simultaneously highlighting how much time and work goes into them yet encouraging others that it’s possible to make this sort of stuff without unwieldy budgets, state of the art equipment or executive cabals.”
