Paignton filmmaker Ashley Wing’s rather excellent Poppies has finally been accepted by the BBC Film Network – some nine months after its completion.

Film Network is the BBC’s interactive showcase for new British filmmakers, screening three short films in broadband quality every week.

Regular D+CFilm readers will already be familiar with Poppies. Not only was the film selected for the D+CFilm Open Screening for the Two Short Nights film festival, but it was also included in the View From Here film festival.

Shot in Exeter and South Devon and based on a poem by his father-in-law, Stephen J Fry, it’s the second film of Ashley’s WWII trilogy (the first being, of course, Between the Lines).

We’re not the only ones who think it’s great – back in March, it scooped the Best Film gong at the FXhome 2009 awards.

Check it Poppies for yourself (and rate the film!) on the BBC Film Network.

Ashley is currently prepping his first ever feature-length movie, The Cromwell Alert, with Cornish-born writer and actor Clayton Fussell.

Working as Cottage Industry Films, they hope to raise £1million from grants and investment to make the film in 2010.

The prolific pair have also just locked the edit for their latest short, Robbing Peter (look out for the first trailer on D+CFilm soon!) and are working on a super8 short for the straight8 festival. Phew!

Stay tuned to D+CFilm for more about Cottage Industry Films over the coming weeks.
