With 10 years of campaigning for democracy in Burma under its belt it’s hardly surprising that the Co-operative’s first film, Burma VJ, is about just that – democracy in Burma. And the Exeter Picturehouse is getting in on the saffron-coloured celebration by hosting (via-satellite) the Saffron Premiere of the film, introduced by Vivienne Westwood and with a Q&A with the director Anders Østergaard, on Saffron Tuesday, July 14.
The film focuses (in shaky handheld footage) on a band of Burmese reporters who face down death to expose the repressive regime controlling their country armed with nothing but pocket-sized video cameras.
Saffron refers to the Burmese monks’ robes, and you’re called to pull on your mustard-coloured cardi in support.
The event takes place on Tuesday, July 14, at 8.30pm, with a the live link up by satellite to the events staged in London at the UK premiere.
Meanwhile, here’s the trailer
