• WHITE RIVER CINEMA LAUNCH A SUCCESS

Because we’ve been bigging up the new White River Cinema in St Austell – the first new cinema to complex in Cornwall for 70 years, we thought we’d finish offer with a few closing comments.

The ribbon to the £3.5 million four-screen cinema was cut by mayor of Restormel Jackie Bull and managing director of WTW Cinemas David Williams. The first film – Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa – was started by 11 year old Suzanne Watts, who won a competition for the privilege.

David Williams told the Western Morning News: “The opening was a tremendously successful event and had a real buzz about it. We were absolutely delighted with the number of people that turned out to be a part of the first night and join in the celebrations.

“The cinema opening is a fantastic milestone for the town and we are very proud to have delivered such a state-of-the-art building to the people of St Austell for them to enjoy.”

WTW Cinemas is also planning to open a brand-spanking new four-screen cinema in Newquay, and is currently clearing the site for the new build. Newquay has been without a cinema since 1995 when the Camelot (now the Walkabout Bar) closed its doors for the final time. The town at one time had three cinemas, The Camelot, The Victoria and The Astor.

As well as the White River, WTW operate The Regal in Wadebridge, The Cinedrome Padstow and The Plaza at Truro. The Plaza at Truro won the UK RAAM Independent Cinema of the Year award in 2006.
