The tenth (and, if you believe the rumours, final) Animated Exeter festival kicks off next year on January 14.
Taking place at various venues in and around Exeter, the official programme ‘hits the shelves’ in a few weeks, but, in the meantime, D+CFilm can give you a glimpse of what the Phoenix will be offering at the festival.
The shebang will be launched at the venue with Films Of The Golden West (Jan 14) – a selection of films submitted by the companies represented in the Tales From The Golden West exhibition.
Then you’ve got to wait a few weeks for the Best Of The West Awards event (Feb 13), featuring the latest films from graduates of animation courses in South West and South Wales.
Following the awards will be the South West premiere of Masaaki Yuasa’s Mind Game. Described at the NY Asian Film Festival as ‘one of the greatest animated films of all time’, it sees Mishi tangling with the Yakuza and travelling to heaven as he tries to rescue his ex-girlfriend.
There are yet more South West premieres on February 15, with kids’ adventure Go West: A Lucky Luke Adventure (directed by Olivier Jean-Marie) followed by Sita Sings The Blues (directed by Nina Paley).
Workshops across the festival include Alan Gilbey’s animation writing event (Feb 14), Life Drawing For Animators (Feb 15) with Aardman’s Sara Easby, and various Animarathon half-day workshops.
D+Cineastes will also want to visit the Phoenix’s Big Careers Day (Feb 13). Aimed at students and young people, it promises a bunch of presentations by industry speakers giving introductions to the world of animation.
