Award-winning director to return to South Devon and the View From Here

Award-winning director Jerry Rothwell is set to return to South Devon for this year’s View From Here film festival, which takes place throughout South Devon from December 1 to December 5, when his documentary Heavy Load is shown at the Alexandra Cinema, Newton Abbot, on Thursday, December 4 at 7pm.

Last year Jerry, who co-directed Deep Water, the documentary about Donald Crowhurt’s tragic attempt to circumnavigate the globe, took part in the first View From Here film festival when he talked about the movie at Teignmouth. He was joined by Simon Crowhurst, who had not returned to the seaside town since waving his father goodbye for the last time nearly 40 years before.

This year Jerry returns to the View From Here with an equally emotional documentary – Heavy Load. It’s a tale of punk band Heavy Load, some of the members of which have learning disabilites, as they play gigs, tour and reach for the big time.

Some times called ‘a film about happiness’ it ‘is a comedy of conflicting ambitions, capturing the sweat and romance of playing in a band as they move out of the ghetto of disability club nights to test whether their dreams can survive in the mainstream’.

The film has been picking up good reviews since it’s release at the SXSW festival and featured at the Cornish Film Festival as well as winning the highly regarded BritDocs audience award.

Director Jerry will be on hand at the Alexandra Cinema for a Q&A about the two years he took making of the film with the band.

This is just one of the events during the week-long celebration of moving image in the South West that is The View From Here.
