THE THIRD WAVE COLLECTIVE

It’s not often a new film movement is created right under your very nose, but there’s a whole lot of interesting stuff going on in Exeter under the title of The Third Wave Collective.

In an attempt to break through the technical quagmire of ‘laborious technical process of ‘filmmaking’, those enterprising Third Wave crew have devised a manifesto that will get your films made and ready to roll in under 90 minutes.

Granted the films have to be shorter than two minutes themselves, but you get the idea.

You can also edit existing footage into a new film.

Take a look at The Art of… Space Travel, above. It was shot in five minutes and edited in 40 on the same day. And the Third Wave Collective challenge is for you to make a new film with the same footage.

And here’s the rules from the collective itself:

• You are ONLY allowed to use the existing FOOTAGE that has already been shot – this includes the existing SOUNDTRACK, all of which is available in the PROJECT FOLDER.

• You MUST keep the title of the film the same: The Art of…Space Travel – you can redo the font, or place the title anyway and anywhere you choose to in the timeline, or chop up the soundtrack…AND you can even put your name down as the director.

• You only have 90 minutes to complete the edit.

• To be part of this project, you MUST formally arrange your editing slot with either Jonas Hawkins or Stuart Mitchell. They will officially track your 90 minutes of editing time – with an hour glass!!!

• Your film (as with all films produced in conjunction with Third Wave) MUST come in at two minutes or under, and be able to fit on a USB stick – hence the term U S B-movie.
Your completed version will then be immediately transferred onto a USB stick

NOTE:
- You will need to have a basic grasp of Final Cut Pro - remember, you only have 90mins.
- To arrange your FREE editing time with Jonas or Stuart at the Media Centre, call: 01392 667066 or email: media@exeterphoenix.org.uk

Third Wave will view all the versions of ‘The Art of…Space Travel’ films and collectively vote on five versions which seem to be the most CREATIVE – we will avoid using the word BEST, because this is NOT a competition in TECHNICAL ABILITY but an exercise in CREATIVITY.

Why all these restrictions? Because we want people to work under a certain amount of pressure in order to bring out their SPONTANEITY and CREATIVITY in a NON-COMPETITIVE and INFORMAL ENVIRONMENT… and you just may learn something about your own approach to practice in the process.

And like all the best shops, this offer has a shelf life: FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 12.

Third Wave will arrange a screening of all 5 versions of the same film (along with a Q & A with each filmmaker) at some point, sometime, somewhere in the near future….Good luck.
