THE WAY THEY LIVED

“This film is made for the people of the Blitz, in the hope that their newly built cities will be worthy of their fortitude,” said Jill Craigie about the documentary The Way We Live, which will be shown tomorrow as part of Plymouth Arts Centre’s 60th anniversary celebrations (July 22) at 8.30pm
“Made in 1946, the film shows the conception of the Watson-Abercrombie plan for the rebuilding of Plymouth after the devastation of the Blitz. It portrays post-war life and readjustment for an average British family in Plymouth, and highlights the efforts of the mayor and town planners to fulfil their vision of the city’s reconstruction. The plan hoped to bring social improvement and modern amenities.”
There will be a short introduction by writer and local historian Chris Robinson before the film, who, no doubt, will draw comparisons with the recent redevelopment Plymouth has undergone… or will he? Go along and find out.
Tickets are £6 (£4.75 concessions), and advance booking is highly recommended. Contact the box office on 01752 206114.
