Creative types should note that the deadline is looming for submissions to create the incredibly prestigious D+CFilm and Phoenix Media award for the Two Short Nights film festival.
For those of you considering a post prandial today, spare a thought for the French fella Philippe Petit, who on August 7, 1974, stepped out on a wire suspended between New York’s twin towers, then the world’s tallest buildings. He spent an hour dancing around before he was caught and thrown into jail. (more…)
Here we come full circle and look at the big picture. Got acting tips, or if you’ve got a project getting off the ground, get in touch and we’ll try to hook you up.

Following a flurry (it says here) of entries from budding filmmakers in the West Country, Virgin Media announced this week that Kevin Spacey will be joining the judging panel for Virgin Media Shorts.
‘Ques’que c’est Virgin Media Shorts?’, we hear you ask. Why, it’s the first ever short film competition to run across four screens - TV, cinema, mobile and computer, of course.
Icarus Films got in touch with news that they are producing the debut music video for Cornish solo artist Kat Kennedy Wills, and they are looking for a number of people for cast and crew.
They are shooting on HDV and Jonathan Brassington of Icarus Films told D+CFilm: “We are operating on a zero budget so, unfortunately, we cannot pay normal rates or even expenses. But everyone will be fed and watered and featured roles will receive a copy of the DVD.
“We have already received a lot of interest and the film is set to be a fantastic showreel piece for anyone involved. And is ideally suited for anyone based in Cornwall.

The Plaza cinema in Truro has added a whole new dimension (ha!) to a night out at the movies.
It’s just taken delivery of a buncha digital REAL D 3D equipment - the first of its kind in the South West, doncha know.
Pay attention - here comes the science bit. Previous 3D technology required glasses that had one red eye and one green eye (a bit like David Bowie) meaning the picture quality was, as the experts say, ‘pretty crap’.
For the fourth in the series of onscreen acting skills with Josephine Larsen, of the Advanced Acting Workouts she looks towards method, finding your emotion and focusing on looking and listening. Sounds simple, huh, but it takes a lot of skill. And you start but watching the film.
The Barn Cinema, Dartington, has the dubious notoriety of being one of the rudest places this cinema goer has ever been to – but it’s got a mighty fine programme. And just like French waiters the attitude might have a certain allure. And if you want to get your film shown there before a main feature, now’s the time to enter.
The Totnes Short Film Festival – Shoot – is calling for entries for its September event and films will be shown at the Barn as well as the Barrelhouse, Totnes during the Totnes Festival.
Any length with doodle do - from 30 seconds to 10 minutes, and all you have to do is download, fill in and send off the entry form, and cross your fingers.
There’s nothing quite like a silent movie, especially if there’s sound, especially if it’s a soundtrack that is live and played by a five-piece band from Cornwall. And oddly enough that’s exactly what is going to happen at Plymouth Arts Centre on July 5.
Wurlitza, ‘the completely strange and completely wonderful’ five-piece band from St Germans will play a live soundtrack to classic silent movie Sunrise at the arts centre. The line-up includes guitars, vocals, bass, keyboard, clarinet and percussion, and their carefully orchestrated soundtrack reflects a variety of musical influences – everything from jazz and blues through to ska and pop. Of particular interest to music aficionados will be a mazurka adapted from an original score by Cornish composer Herbert Lanyon, father of artist Peter Lanyon, which will be played for the first time at the screening of Sunrise.
We’re no silent experts, but according to the blurb: ‘Made in 1927 by German Expressionist film maker FW Murnau, Sunrise was one of Hollywood’s most ambitious projects. Groundbreaking filmmaking techniques, distorted sets and expressive lighting demonstrated what was possible near the end of the silent era. Murnau was given complete artistic freedom to make the film, which has become one of the most revered of all time. It tells the story of a countryman and his wife whose lives are invaded by a femme fatale from the city.’
When the people in charge of this short film about creativity in the South West said that loads of creative blogs were showing it, we just had to jump on the bandwagon. And there is a mention of Plymouth, so it’s not all Bristol, Bristol, Bristol - although it could have done with a bit more of a mention about how richly vibrant the scene is around the D+CFilm environs.
Anyway, take a sup of the region’s creative juices and see what flows out.
