The Don Letts’ will close the Flipside Film Festival tonight at 6pm at Plymouth Arts Centre, with a talk, readings and a panel discussion followed by the events closing party, where the legendary Letts himself will be DJ-ing.
Legendary, ehh? Well, sure. His career has spanned four decades, he’s won a Grammy (with Westway to the World in 2003), directed countless music video, broke new ground with music documentary and is attributed with single-handedly converting punks into reggae-ites. It was the punk ethic that inspired his DIY filmmaking, with The Punk Rock Movie – shot on Super8.
Most recently, the Don – as he isn’t called – was involved with Speakers Corner in 2007, a multi-artist response to the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the British slave trade.
Oh, and he’s on radio (BBC 6 Music), and he’s just finished a DVD (The Clash: Revoution Rock), and his autobiography’s out (Culture Clash: Dread Meets Punk Rockers).
Dancehall Queen and Westway to the World, followed by the talk, is on tonight (Saturday May 31) at Plymouth Arts Centre at 6pm.
