Media’s future

Two Shorts Nights and D+CFilm are calling for your visions of the future to design the prize for the next Two Short Nights short film festival, which takes place at the Exeter Phoenix, on November 28 and 29.

Artists of all disciplines, including sculptors, model makers, electronic and digital artists, are being asked called to submit their ideas for this prestigious and ground-breaking prize.

The theme for this year’s festival is ‘the future of filmmaking’ and deals with the impact new technology has had and will have on the world of the moving image. Designs for the prize should reflect that.

Prizes are presented to the Exeter Phoenix bursary film and audience award winners to the films that are shown throughout the festival.

Last year’s highly successful prize was designed by Helen Snell with circuity by George Lazenbleep. The collaboration sparked new work for the artists and received heaps of media coverage.

Professional as well as emerging artists, including students, are invited to submit. A wide variety of materials, including for example wood, textile and pulp, will be accepted. It must be possible for the selected award to be duplicated, as up to five copies will be handed out during the Two Short Nights film festival.

The winning artist will be selected by a panel of regional arts professionals. The panel will mainly be looking for original, innovative approaches to the concept of a film award. The winning statuette will become the official 2008 Two Short Nights film festival award and the winning artist will be featured on D+CFilm and will be promoted in all associated press and publicity material for the festival including the Exeter Phoenix brochure which is distributed to over 20.000 people in the South West region and beyond. No cash prize is available, but some expenses may be met by negotiation.

Artists who wish to put forward an existing work of art or craft, are required to submit by sending in a minimum of two clear images of the work, an artist statement and their CV or a short biography including their full contact details.

Artists who wish to propose an idea for a new work of art or craft are required to write a synopsis of their proposed idea (including details of how they intend to plan and realise the design and creation of the work within the given period of five months) and to also preferably include a sketch of the finished product as they envisage it, as well an artist statement, their CV or a short biography including their full contact details.

The deadline for submissions is July 4. The panel will notify the winning artist by August 1 and no other applicants will be contacted. The finished artwork needs to completed and ready for collection by Monday November 3.

Please send all submission material to: Two Short Film Nights Award Submissions, Exeter Phoenix Media Centre, Bradninch Place, Gandy Street, Exeter, Devon EX4 3LS
