Rendez-Vous in Exeter (video)
Animated Exeter is drawing to a close over the next coupla days - and they’ve saved the best ’til (almost) last.
Yup, there’s a special screening of Sylvain Chomet’s gloriously inventive and hugely influential Belleville Rendez-Vous at the University of Exeter tonight (c’est jeudi, monsieur).
This Oscar-nominated tale sees club-footed Madame Souza preparing her grandson to be a world-class cyclist. All is going well, until he is kidnapped by the mafia, so Souza plans a rescue with the help of her soppy mutt and three ageing Music Hall stars.
The whole thing is primarily dialogue free and laced with nods to the likes of Tex Avery and Max Fleischer, as well as moments of satire (it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out Belleville represents America) and genius (check out the doggy dream!).
In short, we really really really recommend it. The screening begins at 7.30pm and will cost you just £4.50 (£3.50 concs) to get in. Here’s a great clip to whet your appetite.
