Knight time (video)

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Stop the bloody press - we have Ashley Wing’s Hard Day’s Knight to show you!

Regular readers will remember that this ‘mocumentary of epic proportions’ follows Britain’s only professional knight in shining armour. Irregular readers (boo, hiss!) better click here and here to refresh their memories.

Unfortunately, the short has been turned down by Raindance and the BBC, which is a shame cos we think it has a lot going for it.

But the rejection certainly hasn’t slowed Mr Wing down any - he told D+CFilm he’s currently writing a feature (set to shoot in 2009) and working on another short he’s planning to bang out before the end of the year. Crikey!

Anyway, have a look for yourselves - and let us know what you think, at info@dandcfilm.co.uk or simply leave a comment (as you do).

French bred (video)

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Two Days In Paris is released tomorrow, and to celebrate D+CFilm has an interview with director and star Julie Delpy for your delectation.

The movie has inevitably been compared to Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, but we reckon there’s also a hefty dose of Woody Allen and Godard thrown in there too (check out Delpy’s Woody-specs in the trailer!).

In short, it’s a sterling debut, which, had it been directed by a fella, would’ve been lauded as a masterpiece from a hot new talent to watch. As it is, idiot critics have admitted it’s pretty good, yknow, for a woman.

Anyway, we reckon we’re gonna run the interview on Saturday, so be sure to tune in then. In the meantime, here’s the Two Days In Paris trailer. And yes, we managed to get through this post without mentioning One Night In Paris, which, as you well know, is a different kinda film entirely.

Get the message

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

The Alliance for Climate Protection has joined forces with Current TV to launch a video message competition urging the community and government to solve the climate crisis. Yup, that should sort it.

They call these video messages ‘ecospots’ and they can be either 15, 30 or 60 seconds long.

We’re not really sure how you’re gonna end the climate crisis in just 15 seconds, but the best videos will be broadcast on the channel and entered into a competition to be judged by an ecologically conscious jury of celebrities (as opposed to all the ecologically unconscious celebrities out there).

Click here to find out more. You’d better get a wriggle on - deadline for entries is September 16.

Look animated

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

There’s a chance for a local company or organisation to sponsor a prize as part of Animated Exeter 2008.

The Screen Out Loud category attracts submissions from amateur and professional animators across the South West. After being shown at the festival, selected films will go on to tour the region.

If you’re interested in finding out more, call Liz Harkman on 01392 265208.

And while we’re on the subject of Animated Exeter, submissions are now open for you to submit your opus.

Categories include Best of the West (open to South West student animators), Exanimation (open to children, young people’s animation workshops, school groups or individuals under the age of 18 in the South West) and, of course, the aforementioned Screen Out Loud.

Entry forms and the so-called ‘terms and conditions’ are available on the website. Deadline for entries is November 2. The festival runs from February 11-23 next year.

Photo Finnish

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

Finnish artist Eeva-Mari Haikala visits Exeter’s Spacex today for Still - her first major solo exhibition in the UK.

The show features a 16mm film, called Attempts To Be Still, in which the viewer is invited to gaze upon a woman lying on a bed, just breathing and being still. Heck, that’s a rarity in itself!

While they were shooting this piece, an actor with cameras attached to his body roamed the set. This footage is being shown as a three screen installation, titled Remote.

It all sounds a bit kinky and, as such, well worth checking out. The exhibition runs until September 22.

Leggy bond

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

There’s great news for D+Cineastes in the Plymouth area. At the beginning of next month, the Arts Centre cinema will be closed for two weeks for refurbishment. About bloody time too!

Heck, the blurb even mentions those magic words: ‘generous legroom’. Not just ‘legroom’, you note - but ‘geeeenerous legroom’.

‘You want legroom? Here’s a bit. And some more. Hey, why not have all the legroom?! Take it! GO ON!’

Where were we? Ah yes, we have fond memories (ha!) of watching The Godfather at the Plymouth Arts Centre. We seriously walked with a stoop
and stick for about a week afterwards. And that was when we was just
six-years-old!

We don’t mean to exaggerate though. The Arts Centre is not the only local arthouse with drawbacks. We remember watching Infernal Affairs at the
Exeter Picturehouse and having to view the movie with our head at a
45 degree angle to the rest of our body. And it was in Japanese or sumfing. Clearly some mistake.

Oh, and let’s not get started on the sheer rudeness of staff at The Barn.
PRSD’s Cptn has been hassling us for some time to start a ‘rudest arthouse’ award especially for The Barn - but, as you well know, we’re faaar too magnanimous for that kinda thing. In fact, we’re sorry we even brought it up.

Anyway, we’re veering off the point. The Arts Centre revamp promises brand-new, ultra-comfortable seating with the aforementioned ’geeeenerous legroom’ in a spacious, stylish and relaxed setting. Sounds great, don’t it?!

The cinema reopens on September 14 but the galleries and the vegetarian restaurant remain open as usual. Hooray!

The only way is sup

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Pretend you’re that bloke from Sideways at a wine-tasting event to raise money for the Cornish Film Festival.

They’re expecting to raise £500 towards the fest, which should be a piece of proverbial when the tickets cost £30 each.

It’s gonna be held at the Wine Chapel in the Constantine area of Falmouth
(we assume this makes sense to somebody) at 8pm on Wednesday,
September 12.

There are only 16 tickets available so you’d better bung an email in the direction of festivaltasting@cornwall.vg for more details.

A mighty wind

Monday, August 20th, 2007

Hailed as ‘pulse-accelerating’ by Film Review and as a ‘first rate Korean thriller’ by Uncut, Typhoon is released today through Premier Asia as a special two-disc DVD edition.

Set against the backdrop of the tense political standoff between North and South Korea (surely not), the plot revolves around a psychotic, modern-day pirate bent on contaminating the entire Korean peninsula with deadly radioactive dust with the help of an approaching typhoon. Ah, that old chestnut.

Ambitious and technically impressive, the film successfully takes on Hollywood at its own game. Click here to watch the trailer - it’s got a speed boat in it. Yknow, like Miami Vice, only… erm, good.

Jet set silly (video)

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

Peversely, for a site called D+CFilm, we actually get pretty bored watching
other people’s movies. But we came across one the other day, while yomping through MySpace, that we actually watched through to the end! Almost un-bloody-heard of.

So when we say you should watch this, we mean it, maaan. It’s hilarious - especially if you remember the days of joysticks stuck to Beano annuals and Jet-Set Willy (ask yer Granddad).

Unfortunately, we have absolutely no idea of where this came from or who it’s by - although there are a few similar pieces on YouTube.

Hey, praps a hip, young D+Cineaste can shed some light on the matter. Send your thoughts to info@dandcfilm.co.uk

Anyway, have a look.

Space out (video)

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

Even though you love D+CFilm, it’s still a bit of an arse ache to check in every day. So, inevitably, you’re gonna miss things.

But don’t shake your fist at the sky and berate the wind for ‘cracking thou cheeks’ (or whatever). Simply head over to the D+CFilm MySpace page, where you’ll find a blog featuring links the fortnight’s best bits.

The links have titles like ‘Homoerotic relationships with dwarves’ and ‘Fun with mutating encryption algorithms’, so you pretty much know what to expect.

It’s probably the best way of keeping up with what’s going down on D+CFilm - other than, yknow, actually reading the bloody thing.

Oh, and while you’re there, why not check out the PRSD MySpace page? They’re on Facebook too (sign in and use yer fat sausage fingers to type ‘PR South Devon’ into the search box).

Where will it all end?! At this rate, we’ll be poncing about in Tron suits by
next week…

By the book (video)

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

There’s a couple of chances for D+Cineastes to catch advance screenings of Atonement, starring boney-old Keira Knightley, over the next few days.

First up, there’s one at the Exeter Picturehouse tomorrow, where the USP will be a live satellite Q&A with director Joe Wright.

We’re guessing the Q&A will be conducted in London or somewhere, but that doesn’t stop you from hollering questions at the big screen now, does it?

Then, on Wednesday, there’s a ‘gala screening’ (oh yes!) of the movie at Plymouth’s Vue cinema.

The USP at that show will be a free DVD copy of Joe Wright’s rather excellent Sense & Sensibility adap, and a copy of the Atonement novel, by Ian McEwan.

We’re all for building-in value, but where will it all end? At this rate, the Wharf will be offering a free blowie from Keira at every screening.

Ach, we can but dream… But in the spirit of built-in value, here’s the Atonement trailer in all its glory.

Super fantastiche

Friday, August 17th, 2007

Wanna know how we spent most of last night? Well, we’ll tell you - playing the online Superman Returns game (click here to play).

Even though it’s probably a year old by now (oh yes, D+CFilm brings you all the very latest news!), it’s a whole heap more engrossing than Singer’s actual movie turned out to be. And not a Superbrat in sight!

Regular readers who remember our utter cack-handed ineptitude when it comes to computer games, will be pleased to note that we’re as crap as ever.

At one point, Superman stopped flying, walked up to the camera and shook his head balefully at our efforts.

In fact, the thing offers conclusive proof that we should never, ever work on a newspaper - specially if we ever happen to find ourself in Metropolis (which luckily almost never happens).
