Crafty idea

Craftspeople will be filmed in action at The Contemporary Craft Fair in Bovey Tracey this weekend.

Devon-based film company Making Spaces is gonna create a living record of the fair, capturing it on celluloid (or whatever) for the first time. Hooray!

Luckily, the Making Spaces johnnies are dab hands when it comes to documentaries about craftspeople. The company is renowned for its intimate portraits of makers, going behind the scenes to film them at work and describing the inspiration for their work.

Visitors to the evening cinema event at The Contemporary Craft Fair on Friday at 9.30pm can watch a series of short films by Making Spaces at the on-site Skylight Cinema at Mill Marsh Park in Bovey Tracey. There’ll also be a screening of the 1939 movie classic The Hound Of The Baskervilles at 9.15pm.

Sarah James, the director of the Contemporary Craft Fair, told D+CFilm: “We are really thrilled that Making Spaces will be there alongside the 160 designers taking part.

“Making Spaces are masters at capturing the creative process and going behind the scenes to find out from makers what inspires their use of materials and subject matter. We will then use the film to promote the fair on the internet.”

Making Spaces is also supporting the Masterclasses Tent at the fair, where visitors will be able to work with designers including Lucy Casson, Liz Clay, Jenny Crisp and Rachel Gogerly. There’s no need to book – just turn up and have a bloody go.
