Text maniacs (video)
We were so caught up telling you about PRSD and the lovely Emma Kempton at the Plymouth Media Partnership innovation awards we forgot to tell you who won the prize for best Mobile entry.
Well, it was Noogy, the 25-metre electronic pet that made the University of Plymouth’s Portland Square building its home during last year’s Motionplymouth event. Passers-by were able to text Noogy and ask it questions, to which it gave replies.
It was described by judges as ‘a very interesting and innovative way of using the built environment interactively and a very clever use of ubiquitous mobile technology’ - which is basically a convoluted way of saying ‘it was ace’.
Unfortunately, Noogy also caused controversy at Motionplymouth when it was targetted by drunken texters and started puking globs of potty-mouthed swearery at the masses. Whoops!
Predictably, that was the angle Plymouth’s Herald decided to run with, having obviously run out of Karrallon stories to print.
Still, Motionplymouth’s Dawn Melville was cock-a-hoop with the gong: “We’re delighted that Noogy won at the awards, underlining the innovation that went into the installation that was part of Motionplymouth.”
The team behind Noogy are also friends of Motionplymouth, including creators Chris Saunders of Openreel, Lee Nutbean and Institute of Digital Art and Technology curator Birgitte Aga.
