What’s your Flavel?
Oscars eat your proverbial heart out, cos The Flavel cinema in Dartmouth is hosting the European premiere of Acts of Imagination tonight. Da da dah!
The Canadian flick follows Ukrainian immigrants struggling to adapt to life
in Vancouver - probably something to do with all those mountains and
coffee shops.
Apparently the film was acclaimed at the Toronto film festival, but the first review we found was on IMDb with the heading ’Ukraine Migraine’.
It said: ‘Boring camera work, a laughable male lead whose accent comes and goes, and a script that ultimately goes nowhere. I’m all for independent Canadian cinema but it doesn’t have to have the effect of fingernails scratching on the blackboard’. Oh dear.
Nevertheless, star of the film, Stephany Hayes, and director, Carolyn Combs, will be attending the premiere and hanging around afterwards to answer questions and yap about the movie.
Also, director Carolyn will be judging a series of shorts created by students at Dartmouth Community College. The winning film will be shown at The Flavel prior to a second screening of Acts of Imagination on Sunday.
All of which suggests a great attitude and that we shouldn’t be too harsh on the filmmakers (for a change).
Tickets for the premiere cost £6.50, including a glass of champagne, and are available on 01803 839530. The Sunday screening is at 5pm with tickets at £5.50 (but you’ll have to bring your own champagne).
