Peak practice (video)
D+Cineastes in Plymouth will certainly wanna check out a free screening of The Power of Community - How Cuba Survived Peak Oil tomorrow at the University of Plymouth’s Devonport Lecture Theatre.
The film documents Cuba’s emergency transition to local organic agriculture, renewable energy, and large-scale mass transit. The transition occurred following the Soviet collapse in 1990, when their massive subsidies of imported oil and food to Cuba were halted.
Brought to you by those lovely chaps at Plymouth Environment Centre and the Centre For Sustainable Futures, the movie starts at 7pm and will be followed by a bit of a yap about the issues raised. Call 01752 290015 for more details.
Apparently, their last screening at the uni was attended by some 91 citizens - most of whom stuck around for the discussions afterwards.
Here’s a clip of Megan Quinn of The Community Solution talking about The Power of Community. Don’t let the whole Donnie Darko/Patrick Swayze vibe put you off. I’m not afraid any more!
